And Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me." (Matthew 11:4-6 February 24th / Feast of the First & Second Finding of the Head of John the Baptist)

"And blessed is the one who is not offended by me." Can someone give some insight into this?

Hi Rose, yes, that last part catches my attention too!

Perhaps it makes sense to compare it to another scripture passage:

And he(Jesus) said, "Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country." Luke 4:24

Not everyone could accept or swallow the things Jesus had to say nor the things he did (e.g. healing the sick, raising the dead, focusing on the poor, etc.)and that is obvious by the responses of some of the Pharisees, Chief Priests, and, at times, his own disciples. But he is saying that those who do not take offense (and I would think...do accept) these things as mentioned by him in the passage you quote...are blessed.

Prosperity was a very highly respected state in the society of his time...so the poor were not honored as Jesus honored them. Those who opposed Jesus's ways and methods...were generally offended by his success and that he had the admiration of the common people. They took offense and, therefore, were not blessed. Eventually this reluctance to accept Jesus and his actions led to his trial and execution.

In Christ,

Mary Jo

Amen.

A reluctance which would eventually turn to irritation. The squiggley worm (maggot) of uncomfortable conscience. The ever twisting maggot feeding in decaying garbage.

Dear Porter, I had forgotten how well you nailed things in few words. Would that I could do that!
