Something I said during my speech at my own wedding almost 9 years ago.

Marriage is not a 50/50 deal. It's 100/100.
We must give 100% each.

As I addressed my bride:

Don't walk behind me - I may not lead
Don't walk infront of me - I may not follow
Just walk beside me, and be my friend.

All who married their best friend - raise your paw!

(my hand is up)

30 something years while all our friends are either divorced or on 2dn and 3rd marriage.

It also helps to pray for one's spouse, for one's marriage relationship, and for oneself as an integral part of that marriage relationship. I shared my own marriage prayer on this part of the forum once before. It's not the only one out there, but it has helped me for the past 29 years. My theory--remember that theories are like sweat socks (everyone has at least two and most of them smell bad)--is that anything that one is moved to perceive as good and as something sent by God needs to be prayed for. God has to be part of the success story. To build on Him is to build on a solid foundation. I've also found that if the Holy Spirit is behind what you are praying for, the inspiration to continue that prayer will be there to "nudge" one to continue. If not, the prayer seems to evaporate when one's own "persistence" weakens.

In Christ,

BOB

O Lord, my God, have mercy on ________ and me. Grant that we may perceive that the married state is holy and that we must keep it so. Grant that no strife, quarrel, or enmity may arise between us or hereafter become active among us. Grant us our Daily Bread whereby we may ever serve You with a quiet mind and deepen our Communion with You and with each other. Let us finally attain to Your Kingdom and have You recognize us as Your own. For to You are due all glory, honor, and worship, together with Your Father Who is from everlasting, and Your All-Holy, Good, and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. AMEN.
