I have just been informed by my mother of the death of my paternal grandfather, Thomas DeVille, about an hour ago at the age of 90.

I'm flying home from Ottawa tomorrow for the funeral, but will have to return to Ottawa late next week for a re-scheduled exam and contract work that needs to be finished before the holidays. Pray that I get through everything!

But pray especially and most importantly for the repose of his soul and pray for my family, my father especially, who will be so hard hit by this--not least so close to Christmas.

Eternal memory! Give rest, O Saviour, to the soul of your departed servant, in a place of light, verdure, and tranquility.

Adam DeVille

Dear Adam,

I lost my grandfather, Fr. John, when he was 90 as well.

Sincerest condolences to you and your entire family!

May your grandfather be a new and great intercessor for you all in the Heavenly Kingdom of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit!

May the Lord grant Him eternal life in His presence. May you and your family find solace in the memory of your grandfather and in the certainty of God's love for him and for you all.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Many thanks for the solicitude of your prayers and fraternal sentiments, which I very much appreciated and continue to appreciate.

The funeral went "well," as far as well can be allotted in such situations. He--and all my family--was Anglican, and the funeral was according to their modern rite. I gave the homily and introduced several Byzantine elements, including the funeral tropar (tone 4) and excerpts from St. John Damascene's idiomela (using Fr. Peter Galadza's translation).

There was a palpable sense of the end of an era in family history: now there are only two, instead of three, generations of DeVille men--my father and me. He has buried both his parents now, and so that sense is doubly strong for him, I'm sure.

Anyway, thanks again for all your kindnesses!

In Christ,

Adam

May the Lord God grant to his newly departed servant, Thomas, blessed repose, where there is no pain sorrow or mourning, but light and life everlasting! May his memory be eternal!
