I would like to issue a prayer for a most pious and reverent prelate. The Patriarch has had an eventful 33 years since his enthronement and throughout schism and government attacks, has maintained the Church and is helping it recover its strength. He has unfortunately been in bad health recently but has still managed to take the initiative in attempting to rally support among his Orthodox colleagues in other countries for the Bulgarian medics on trial in Libya for allegedly deliberately infecting children with HIV. I do not think that many here will forget his welcome to the Pope (turning up when he was not expected to) or indeed his officiation of the swearings-in of Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg and President Georgi Purvanov...the first time it had happened in so many years. But I prattle.

I pray to the most Holy Theotokos, and to St John of Rila that the Patriarch gets better and continue his pontificate.

+EIS POLLA ETI DESPOTA!

May the Lord strengthen and support His Beatitude, MAXIM, Metropolitan of Sofia and Patriarch of All Bulgaria and grant him Many Years of Health, Happiness, and Holiness!

Prayer of Philaret, Metropolitan of Moscow

My Lord, I know not what I ought to ask of Thee. Thou and Thou alone knowest my needs. Thou lovest me more than I am able to love Thee. O Father, grant unto me, Thy servant, all which I cannot ask. For a cross I dare not ask, nor for consolation; I dare only to stand in Thy presence. My heart is open to Thee. Thou seest my needs of which I myself am unaware. Behold and lift me up! In Thy presence I stand, awed and silenced by Thy will and Thy judgments, into which my mind cannot penetrate. To Thee I offer myself as a sacrifice. No other desire is mine but to fulfill Thy will. Teach me how to pray. Do Thyself pray within me. Amen.
