I preached in a Baptist church in Pecs, Hungary a few years ago. In the centre of town was a beautuful cathedral. It was one of the Byzantine churches. Anybody know off hand which group it was probaly a part of.

Just curious. I remember the beautiful exterior especially.

Berean,

This site: http://www.greatestcities.com/Europe/Hungary/Pecs_Funfkirchen_city.html says that there's an 11th-century Romanesque Roman Catholic cathedral in the city. Could this be the church of which you're thinking? Are you sure the church was Byzantine?

If it was in fact Byzantine, I'd bet it was Greek Catholic...probably not Orthodox; the site says Pecs is near the Croatian border, and the vast majority of Croats are Catholic as well.

Logos Teen might be close, or right, on this one! The website of the City of Pecs says a former museum at the center of the City is now used as a Catholic Church, a cathedral, and displays a prominent dome in the Romanesque tradition. It might be called the "St. Peter's Cathedral!"

At any rate, almost 52% of Hungary's total population are Latin Rite Catholics while only 3% are of the Eastern Rites. Hungary's demographics do not indentify separately the Orthodox.

You may be right - I am not certain it was Byzantine. The building in the pic did not look right, but the one I remember was right in the centre of town and did have a dome.

I just assumed that Hungary would be Eastern - thanks for the info.

There is a mosque in the center of town...could you have been thinking of that?

Gaudior, who has not been in Hungary for a while, so really can't recall anything else...

When one feels hungary, Hungary is a good place to be - the food is superb.

I thought I remember it being a church, but I am getting old.

My Baptist pastor friend in Pecs tells people - "When you are hungry, pray for Hungary"

The food was fantastic, except a bowl of goulash that I had in a small off street resturant. It was bit rough.
