You may think I'm indulging in hyperbole, but the recently reconstructed Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, to me, is heavenly in it's beauty:

http://www.xxc.ru/english/index.htm

I love especially the mix of Byzantine and New Russian iconographic styles in the temple. Note the prodigious quantities of gold leaf in the interior - any one of us could afford early retirement on the value of all that gold!!

Am I the only frustrated architect / artist in the Forum?

God bless all,

NEMO

I'm an Iconographer wannabe. biggrin

The iconography is very interesting, it looks like some of it was done by William Blake, which is impossible. The stylization is very different than what I've seen before.

I'm going to have to go there.

Which is the Cathedral Church of Patriarch Alexey?

I'm not sure about Pat. Alexey's Cathedral. Thought they might have made Christ the Savior it, since it's so beautiful....and very large, too!

P.S. - Me be frustrated iconographer, too, Dr. Eric! smile

Gorgeous!

Do you know what style of architecture/nationality the church in the foreground on this [xxc.ru] page is?

The church in the foreground is the Church of St. Basil, in Moscow. The church in the middle is the Archangelsky Cathedral, obviously the same city. and the Church in the background appears to be the Church of the Holy Savior, Moscow, newly rebuilt.

It occurred to me, on second thought, that you knew it was St. Basil's but inquired more specifically about the architectural style. It is quite unique. There is no other like it. 15th Century Russian. The tsar had the church built for him, then blinded the architect after it was finished in order that no other to rival it would be built.

What about the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg?

Now that's what a church should look like! I often measure such churches against the typical American 'A' frames with garish windows. There's no comparison.

How enticing! It is almost like it is from a fairy tale page. Beauty only rivaled by the imagination.

Here\'s [moscow-taxi.com] one on St. Basil's in Moscow.
