I notice a lot of you use Acromyns such as IMHO and SSPX and such. I understand many, but several I do not get.

Perhaps several other readers also suffer from ALOFUWPPOTFDTAAUOA (A Lack Of Fully Understanding What People Post On This Forum Due To An Abundant Use Of Acronyms).

Can you help me (and others) with some of them?

Kadylo,

This is the kind of query that drives me right off the edge (was pretty close to begin with biggrin ), as I can't get it out of my mind.

So, for your edification and education, several more acronyms and abbreviations that get bandied about here. Some (e.g., CCEO, CIC, RISU) occur rather regularly, others (e.g., HOCNA and TOC) only occasionally, and a few (e.g., SCOOCH) are practically obscure (I know, folks - what a surprise coming from me eek ).

ACA = Armenian Church of America (Orthodox)
BC = Byzantine Catholic
CCEO = Code of Canons of the Oriental Churches(Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium)
CIC = Code of Canon Law (Codex Iuris Canonici) of the Latin Church
CNEWA = Catholic Near East Welfare Association
EC = Eastern Catholic
ECUSA = Episcopal Church of the USA
FRY = former (Federal) Republic of Yugoslavia
HOCNA = Holy Orthodox Church in North America
HTM = Holy Transfiguration Monastery
IOCC = International Orthodox Christian Charities
LCMS = Lutheran Church Missouri Synod
LOL = Laughing out loud
OC = Old Catholics
OCMC = Orthodox Christian Mission Center
OCS = Old Church Slavonic
PNCC = Polish National Catholic Church
RISU = Religious Information Service of Ukraine
ROAC = Russian Orthodox Autocephalus Church
ROCA = Russian Orthodox Church Abroad
ROCiE/ROCE = Russian Orthodox Church in Exile
ROCOR(L) - Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (Metropolitan Lavra)
ROCOR(V) - Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (Metropolitan Vitaly)
ROTFL = Rolling on the Floor Laughing (not done much, we're very dignified :rolleyes: )
SCOBA = Standing Conference of Orthodox Bishops in America
SCOOCH = Standing Conference of Oriental Orthodox Churches (in America)
SVS = Saint Vladimir's Seminary
TOC = True Orthodox Church
UMC = United Methodist Church
UAOC-C = Ukrainian Autocephalus Orthodox Church - Canonical
UAOC-S = Ukrainian Autocephalus Orthodox Church - Sobornopravna
USCCB = United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
VIS = Vatican Information Service

And, before you ask, yes - the Ukrainians (and the Russians as well) deserve a listing onto themselves wink

I would amend my friend Gaudior's listings for:

"ACROD ... American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox" to add "Diocese" at the end of the name

"AO ... Antiochian Orthodox" to "AOCANA = Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America" (the Antiochians' current usage)

There are, undoubtedly, others that escape me at the moment - but, I'll be mulling this over for days yet to come.

Many years,

Neil

Dear Penthaetria:

I thought noone would ever ask because, as time goes by, I would certainly have forgotten what SAAL stood for! biggrin

A confession: I just made it up as an immediate reaction to Gaudior's "translation" for GOA's acronym.

Hence, SAAL stands for "Sometimes at a loss!" But I was actually thinking of "Sometimes at a loss, myself" (SAALM), which more appropriately described Gaudior's predicament, and certainly mine, with regard to the proliferation of these acronyms.

However, I inadvertently missed adding the "M!" And, then, horrors of horrors, the time for editing run out on me! wink

I hope Neil will not come out with his own manufactured acronyms next time around. :p

Now, you and everybody else can relax!

Amado

Hmmm. We must discuss this with the Administrator. Perhaps he can be persuaded to offer a custom-made brand of Byzantine Forum Alphabet Soup.

[Well, someone remarked the other day that many of our topics end up with food!]

Just about the time you think, "well I finally understand all the acronyms," They start posting things in Ukrainian and Slavonic.
