I will be in the Chicago area, actually Itasca, from Sunday 04/06/03 eveing, leaving Friday 04/11/03 afternoon. I am interested in finding a place for the Presanctified Liturgy while I am there.
Any help will be appericated. I would prefer a Catholic church, but if none are around (which I doubt) then Orthodox will suffice.

Dear David:
My parish of Sts. Volodymyr & Olha would be happy to welcome you during your stay in Chicago. We are located at Oakley and Superior Streets, 1/2 block south of Chicago Avenue (a major street).
Some of the more notable services that you may wish to attend: (1) Great Vespers and Lytia for the Feast of the Annunciation on Sunday Evening April 6th (and, of course, the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrys. on Monday); and (2) The Matins of Repentance (Poklony) on Wednesday evening. On most Wendesdays during the Great Fast we would be celebrating the Presanctified, but that week being the 5th week of the Great Fast, the Poklony are sung.
By way of full disclosure, we follow the Julian calendar (as you have no doubt already noted) and services are entirely in Ukrainian.
For Gregorian calendar, you may wish to try the St. Nicholas Cathederal at Rice and Oakley (1 block north of V&O - services also most likely in Ukrainian) or St. Joseph's on the far Northwest side of the city near O'Hare (greatest probability of services in English from among the UGCC parishes).
If you need any more information, telephone numbers, directions, whatever, please post a reply and I will fill in what I can.
Yours,
kl

The Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Parma's Annunciation Parish is located in Homer Glen, IL. I don't know how close that is to where you will be staying, but it certainly would be worth the trip to visit there. Their website is www.byzantinecatholic.com [ byzantinecatholic.com] and it states that they have Presanctified Liturgy on Wed. and Fri. at 7 p.m. The pastor, Father Thomas Loya, (my former pastor in Solon, Ohio) is a noted iconographer and is still in the process of finishing the magnificent iconography all over the interior of the church. I hope you will be able to make it there! Lory

Slava Isusu Christu!
Krylos Leader and Lory have both given good suggestions. I usually attend Annunciation and will probably register there this year.
Several other posters here belong to that parish but it's about 25 to 30 miles south of where you are staying.
I did a quick cut and paste of some other parishes. The Northlake and Palatine locations may be the most convenient for you but they are all pretty easy to reach. Do a Mapquest search.
I am not sure about the Romanian parishes anymore, they may have combined. Unfortunately, most Chicago Byzantine rite parishes do not have fully developed websites yet.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone.
I am a Byzantine (Ruthenian) catholic that currently attends a Melkite parish, be seeing that I am discerning a vocation in the Byzantien (Ruthenain) church, I have decided to give Annunciation a try.
The service is at 7pm, class should be over no later than 4pm and I will have a rental car.
I will just make a stop over to yahoo maps and get some driving directions from the hotel to the Church.
Thanks again!
If any of you are interested in meeting me, send me a private message and we can plan something!
David

David,
One suggestion. We no longer have Wednesday services. We have Thursday services instead. During Great Fast we have several other services. Make sure to contact the Church for the day by day schedule. It is well worth the visit.

That is a good question, Joe. The Presanctified is a Vesperal liturgy specifically appointed for Wednesday and Friday evenings, and is very ancient in the tradition in its association with these evenings. One would think these should be also nights at least some of the faithful could attend, this is puzzling as the Presanctified really embodies the Lenten 'spirit' to a preeminent degree. As I recall both St. Joseph on Cumberland and Palatine have pre-sanctified on Wed. and use some English.

Hello friends, Annunciation BC parish of Homer Glen IL does indeed have presanctified liturgy during Great Lent. For my own reasons (various commitments) I have not been able to attend the presanctified liturgies so far this Lent and I am new at this and since I didn't pay any attention to it, I could not address this question earlier.
Annunciation parish has pre-sanctified liturgy on Thursday and Friday of this Great Lent at 7PM. I only know this because I found the bulletins from the first and second weeks.
I cannot speak for the parish (which is very well run and alive and growing), but I think the schedule may be an accomodation to the particular needs of this parish, it may have to do with the fact that during ordinary time the Divine Liturgy is on Thursday nights and people are used to making the trek on Thursdays. I am only speculating here.
This is a parish that basically does not have a neighborhood. It is between everything and was established in an area that is pretty far from the two communities that were combined to form it. Some of the older people have to arrange for their transportation too. No neighborhood! Mostly undeveloped properties and public forest preserves. Imagine.
All the committed parishioners have to make a special effort to get to the church and the newcomers (like myself) are also usually pretty far from the temple too. I doubt that there have been very many local residents, either converts or Latins, that have joined yet. It's just too early for that.
Last week I attended Saint Josephs on Cumberland Avenue in Chicago, they had an English Liturgy at 11:00 AM on Sunday and it was very nice. They also had a nice book and gift shop right off the Narthex, so I bought my first icon there. The bulletin for that parish indicates presanctified Liturgy on Wednesday and Friday with a Holy Hour on Thursday all at 7PM (Wednesday English and Friday Ukrainian). So that pretty much agrees with what has been said here.
In Christ, Michael
