Hi everyone. I have a few questions about the catholic religion that i need to ask after watching a movie recently (forgive me for being ignorant about the catholic religion, as I am not religious at this point in my life). I recently came across a movie named "Modigliani" while interning at universal, and after watching the movie on Dvd I wondered whether or not Catholics and Jews are allowed to marry. In the story, the main character that Andy Garcia plays is a jew, and his love interest, being catholic, was not allowed to marry him. Does the catholic religion really prohibit marriages with Jews? (for reference about the movie, there is a synopsis on the official website http://www.modiglianithemovie.com/)

Dear James,
Welcome to the forum !
I'll try and answer the best I can but I'm sure one of the Fathers here will be able to better explain it.
It is my understanding that that a marriage between a Catholic (whether Latin or Greek)and a non baptized person requires an explicit dispensation from the Bishop. This is more than is required if a Catholic is marrying a baptized non- Catholic, although some of the same requirements also follow.

I'm in a wedding in a few weeks where the girl's catholic, but the guy wasn't baptized. I had to have my priest ask me all these questions about the guy's intentions, etc, and have the priest sign and seal these "heathen papers" as we jokingly called them. But some other friends also have to vouch for him. He's a good guy but wasn't raised religious. I've taken him to Divine Liturgy once, and I hear he goes to Mass now and then, holidays mostly, so there's hope yet.

But they can marry, but we had to vouch for him. No bishop involved.

Greetings,

I work with a dear friend down here in Tampa. He is Jewish (New Yorker) and his wife is Catholic. They married in a Catholic church in N.Y. close to twenty years ago. Both his daughters are baptized Catholic and the family attends church together most Sundays. Additionally, he also has his family celebrate the Jewish High Holy days, therefore, they are well versed in both Judaic and Christian ceremony (and make a killing for Chanukah and Christmas). One thing though, no Bat Mitzvahs for the girls, only confirmation.

Hope this helps.

In Christ,

Michael

As the offspring of a Jewish/Catholic marriage, I can confirm that it is permissable, though I would have to admit that couples today probably have an easier time of it than my parents had fourty seven years ago.
