It seems quite official. Today morning I received
an email from one of personal addresses of Fr.
Sergius Gajek, MIC, the Apostolic Visitator for
GCs in Byelarus'.
The Russian text, taken from BLAGOVEST-INFO
news service, informs about the recent meeting
of Roman Catholic Episcopate of Russia. The Bishops met on Tuesday January 18th in Sankt-Petersburg and elected Bishop Joseph Werth the
new head of their Conference.
"Besides all four Russian Bishops, the Holy See's
Representative to the Russian Federation, Archbishop Antonio Mennini, took part to the session of the CCRB. He informed bishops gathered
at the session about the decision of Pope John Paul II, who appointed Bishop Joseph Werth an ordinary (in Russian "ordinarijem" - dcn. P.)
for Greek-Catholic who live on Russian territory".

What goes unsaid in this is that Rome has ignored Fr. Sergei Golovanov whom the priests of the Russian Greek Catholic Church voted to be their exarch.

Does this mean Fr. Joseph was selected over Fr. Sergei because Fr. Joseph was seen by the Vatican as the more compliant of the two - i.e., less likely (unlikely ?) to make waves with the MP ?
If so, that figures.

Ostpolitik seems to be alive and well. Werth is a protege of Cardinal Kasper.
Fr. Sergei Golovanov was indeed elected to be the exarch by a synodal vote of his own clergy. He is a Greek Catholic priest and by far the most qualified and obvious choice. I am sure we will hear Fr. Golovanov's reaction soon. I do not think this is a wise move at all. Once again the Russian Greek Catholics are awarded ghetto status for their martyrdom and fidelity.

Notwithstanding my belief in the divine institution of the Petrine primacy, I do believe if I were a member of the Russian Catholic synod, I'd be tempted to vote to send "Kasper the Friendly Modernist" and his lackey, Fr. Joseph, packing back to Rome.

What position has Werth - is he an exarch, an administrator, visitator... or what? Sure, he is not ordinarius, as this does not exist in the Eastern Catholic Churches (cfr. CCEO). Sure he IS an "ordinary". Remember that he's a Latin Bishop - and some Latin Bishops around the world head so-called "ordinariates" for Eastern Catholics without their proper hierarchy. For example, Cardinal Glemp, Metropolitan of Warsaw, is such an ordinary for all Easterners in Poland except members of the UGCC. In fact, his jurisdiction extends to four parishes: three of Armenian "rite" (Gliwice, Cracow, Gdansk) and one of Byzantine-Slavonic "rite" (neo-uniate parish in Kostomloty: no one knows to which Church it belongs  ). Vatican website is rather outdated and I am not sure whether it contains personal appointments and other such stuff. Perhaps not. I know your site and like it very much!  Sincerely, deacon Peter
