Does anybody know what's on the menu for the big Synod that's supposed to be happening in the next couple of days in Ukraine? Has anybody here had the opportunity of accidentally opening up a bishops briefcase and unknowingly read any confidential documents that one might want to share ion this thread? Lauro

Dear Lauro, I actually got our bishop's briefcase opened up as I was carrying it out to his car. He slapped my hand and closed it up pronto! And then he put me under interdict not to mention anything I might have seen there to anyone . . . Really, I think all he had was a proposed luncheon menu . . . Something about priests mixing "Horokh" with "Kapusta" . . . Alex

But that's it. Don't you see? We don't know if the "Kapusta" is kvasna or not, and that makes a big difference and you know that better than I do. Something fishy is going on. Lauro

Dear Lauro, Hopefully that kapusta won't result in the kind of verbal diarrhea we sometimes are subjected to following our synods . . . I hope not. And the fact that the synod is being held in Ukraine - well, I hope that no "kvas" gets thrown into the mix. That would truly result in a remarkable explosion! Alex

As you know, the deadliest and most feared explosions are the silent ones. I guess we just have to sit back and prepare ourselves with gas masks and barf-bags. Lauro

Dear Lauro, Some feel we've been up a similar "creek" without a paddle for some time now . . . Alex

Dear Lauro, And, a further thing, I predict that the Synod will decide to replace your Basilians with Studites . . . Oh, all right, I'm just being cruel . . . Alex

Dear Lauro, Well, things could be worse. You could have Redemptorists . . . What you wrote reminds me of what Cicero once proclaimed of Catalus: Quo usque tandem abutere Catalina patientia nostra? (For how much longer will you try our patience, Catalus?!) Alex

Hmm...Redemptorists. To be honest with you, I don't know much about them. They seem to be the noisy type with the clicking of their rosery beads when walking up and down the church corridor, It must distract the faithful who are trying to pray and meditate, at least that's what I heard from someone on this forum. They did give us some nice saints though. Some of the bishops in Ukraine that are of this order use a full Klobuk and that means that they are Cool. Lauro

Beware of priests in "orders" parading as monks! (wearing kobluks ) We have a Redemptorist priest at my parish. Amongst other things, he used to perform baptisms in the parish hall, prior to Liturgies! Besides the obvious problems with this, it also disrupted pre-Liturgy choir warm-up! Seems someone mentioned this to our bishop who then had a quiet word with said priest. Choir rehearsals are no longer disrupted I know one "Red" (yes, that's a slang term even *they* use) bishop in Australia - wonderful man. Lauro, you may find this hard to believe, but the Exarch in Kyiv, Kyr Vasyl (Medvit) OSBM is bearded and wears a kobluk. Does that make him "cool"? As for the Synod, it seems difficult to get any details of what goes on during the sessions other than the "official" reports which slowly trickle out when all is said and done. I understand that it wouldn't be appropriate to report every little detail, but I would like to see more. I know these events have a program prior to their start, but there's always room for 'other' topics. BTW, I hope to have a meeting with my bishop prior to his departure. I wouldn't be surprised if I happen to mention the Synod at some point.... Andrij

Best place I've found is Kyiv Post or Ukrainian Weekly. They seem to have a much faster line on what goes on in our synod than our own eparchial papers. I have to agree with my brat' Andrij - don't mess with Kyr Vasil of Kyiv or he might hang you with his 100-knot chotki! I have a large picture of him on our refrigerator in full monastic garb, klobuk, long chotki, everything and another of him in beautiful episcopal vestments, velikij omophor, etc. I know it's a shock, Lauro, but he is a Basilian...(and I hear they use the KP Horologion at his parish, not the Basilian Molitvoslov)

Dear Andrij, It is hard to believe that Kyr Vasil Medvit is OSBM. I kind of have my doubts you know. The question here is, Do other OSBMers still consider him to be part of the order, or do they consider him to be the black sheep of the family. And since he does wear a full kobluk, yes that makes him the coolest OSBMer I've ever known.
Dear Diak, I think that the Kyiv Post and the Ukrainian Weekly, bug the conference room, either that or the reporters disguise themselves as deaf and dumb waiters and jot down as much information as possible on napkins. These guys really can't fool me you know. Lauro
