I'm not a big fan of bumper sticker patriotism and have gotten to the point where I seldom bother to read them. Today, I was driving with my oldest nephew, here visiting from Ireland, and busy catching up on what's changed in America since his last return. Suddenly, Cathal spotted and pointed out to me, on the rear of a dump truck, a sticker with an American flag that loudly proclaimed:

THIS TRUCK PROUDLY CARRIES ONLY AMERICAN DIRT!

Ok ... confused

Neil, wondering if a lot of opportunities present themselves for less patriotic truck-drivers to carry wretched foreign dirt eek

"One day all our ethnic traits ... will have disappeared. Time itself is seeing to this. And so we can not think of our communities as ethnic parishes, ... unless we wish to assure the death of our community."

Dear Neil,

I think it was meant to be humorous. Probably mocking the over- patriotism of other Americans... or a play on the word 'dirt'.

My personal fave: What kind of a world protects whales and seal pups...but aborts its own babies?!

May the Lord have mercy on us!

Ah, Father, would that seal pups WERE protected. We have had a few weeks ago a brutal and illegal slaughter of around 60 seals, mostly newborns. See www.irishsealsanctuary.ie [irishsealsanctuary.ie]
This happens often here and these lovely creatures are fast becoming endangered. The ISS is all volunteers who dedicate their whole lives to this work for no money. ( On my prayer and mail list just now)There is so much helpless anger here. It happened too where I lived before and many times since; see the page on my web site....http://www.iol.ie/~anchorhold/Animal/SealMagic.htm

Dear Irish Anchoress,

Why were the beautiful baby seals slaughtered? frown

In Christ,

The fishermen wrongly blame seals for depleted fish stocks. In fact, this is caused by over-fishing, as the Irish Seal Sanctuary and other experts affirm. Seals are protected by law; but the fishermen take the law into their own hands. The Kerry Coast is hard to police. This colony, at Beginish in the Blasket Islands, suffers again and again; this attack wiped out almost all this year's pups, and was totally brutal and inhumane. Nails driven through their eyes and disembowelling etc. Seals are helpless against this kind of attack. Please God they catch some of these men. More have been killed since.

OK, people - this was a light-hearted thread and it appeared as if people were having some fun with it. Was it really necessary to be a kill-joy? UGH!

Yours,

hal

Haven't been able to find anything online about this, so documentation please.

My rule of thumb on bumper stickers, whether political or religious: one flag decal is okay, as is one religious or political bumper sticker. Any more than that and the alarms go off, in proportion to the number of stickers.

And working in a small town, where one knows a lot about the locals, I have noted that if the number of flag decals and patriotic bumper stickers is any indication, registered sex offenders and child molesters are the most patriotic of our citizens.
And if the size of the flag is any indication of patriotism, car dealers are the backbone of America.

Moe; I gave the Irish Seal Sanctuary link above in my mail; here it is again...
irishsealsanctuary.ie
And if you ask Google for Seal Slaughter Ireland; there are many sites.
Hal; I am truly sorry you were offended, but many threads go off in new directions as things crop up that do that. Father Gregory's post did just that of course. Yes what has happened here is shocking and appalling; makes many go to the Guest Book on the Irish Seal Sanctuary Site see link above. And add their comments to the guest book as support for all of us who are trying to get these atrocities stopped in His Dear and Holy Name Who made all and loves all; Jesus . I had hoped that that would happen here rather than what did. This world and these creatures matter to so many. There is no need at all for comment especially not of that ilk,; simply avoid what you do not like as we all have to do, in simple forbearance. Bless you this day. I can say this now I am unsubbing from the forum. Your post was the last straw, simply. As Captain Oates said, " I am going outside and I will be gone a while..."
