If you'd enter a store with various products from Romania (this Eastern zone), what would you like to take as souvenirs?
An icon on glass, an egg decorated with a religious theme, a traditional shirt, a wonderful carved in wood cross...?

Definitely an icon painted on glass. It is unique to Romania.

Dear Marian,
I would look for the handcarved and hand-painted icons of Christ and the Theotokos! I was fortunate in finding a diptych of Christ and the Theotokos, and also an Icon of The Christ Light-giver, all done in this method. They are very beautiful, and Holy.
I have not seen a glass egg icon from Romania. Could someone post a picture? I love the egg icons from Russia, and have a few, and this sounds very interesting!

Dear Marian, Here's a list of some items I bought in Romania--a few for myself, most as gifts for friends and family. It might give you some ideas. Religious items: -Glass icons -Liturgical and devotional books -Vestments -A thin silver and enamel handcross -Thin wood and printing handcrosses -Small wooden neck crosses -Wooden "metanire" (prayer rope) -Paper icon prints and small, inexpensive metal icons -Blessed oil in a bottle with a "rolling" top for anointing -Carved wood free-standing crosses that, when turned over, are actually prescura/prosfora seals Cultural items: -Ceramics -Carved wood spoons -Embroidered cloth purse/hand bag -Beaded Easter eggs -Beaded bracelets -CD of Gypsy music I also received a few gifts, too. Amazingly, I fit everything into two suitcases and a laundry bag.  Doamne ajuta! Dave

I would buy any of those things you mentioned, it would depend on the cost. So considering Roumania is not in the EU... as of yet, the costs would probably be 'very' reasonable.
I know nothing of commerce, but I think an internet business would be great, not to mention finding a distributor of religious items so that we who are not able to travel to Roumania, can acquire some of those beautiful items you mentioned.

Yes, yes Dave all very nice I am sure. You failed to mention the Duty Free  . Now do tell all. Is their wine palatable? Do they do a decent brandy etc? How much can you bring into the USA? Man does not live by all the nice stuff itemised above but by Duty Free as well . I should also ask Fr Maximos HRM as he has spent time over in Romania visiting monasteries. ICXC NIKA

Romanian wine is simply amazing, perhaps some of the best in the world. I was told that France wants to stipulate that if Romania joins the EU, they will need to shut down a large percentage of their vineyards because they're not "noble vineyards" by French standards--that's how good Romanian wines are, and how worried the French viticulturalists are over their existance! Now, about brandy: all Romanians drink "ţuică" (tsoo-EE-ka) which is basically a plum brandy that's equivalent to downing a shot of jet fuel. I think that ţuică falls outside of the traditional fasting rules, because even the monasteries had it at the table during the Dormition Fast. Dave
