Dear Friends,
It is often the case that when people stay apart, their positions harden, but when there is an opportunity to come together, there can sometimes be a real thaw.
I think the SSPX can come to an agreement on what is essential for formal communion with Rome to be established. After that, the life in Christ will heal what needs to be healed still - all this takes time.
At the Union of Brest, for example, there was no indication that the Ruthenian Orthodox Metropolia of Kiev even hinted at the possibility that it was somehow "submitting" to Rome.
And when asked why the Pope was being commemorated in their Orthodox Churches now, the simple people of the villages were wont to reply: "The Pope, then, must have returned to the true Orthodox faith!"
May it be so with all of us in contemporary times!
Alex

If any or all of the four bishops went in, hat in hand, like Bishop Rifan, and as he did show a modicum of charity, humility, and respect, it would happen rather quickly.
He was subject to a similar condition of ipso facto excommunication, being consecrated by Bishop Castro de Meyer, who himself was included in the original 1988 declaration from Rome with Msgr. Lefebvre.
Bishop Rifan did not compromise in the least on the question of the TLM. He simply acknowledged the authority of Rome, he recognized the existence and validity of Vatican II as a Council, along with the validity of the NO. He asked only to keep the Latin ritual of 1962 for himself and his flock. A small cross to bear for full communion with Rome and the guaranteed full use of the TLM as a bishop for all of his flock.
So once or twice a year he has to go to the archdiocesan Cathedral and sit on his throne during a pontifical NO as a visible sign of communion with his Archbishop and Rome. Big deal, and again, a very small cross to bear for unity. When Bishop Rifan goes home to his own parish and cathedral, it is Introibo all the day long. FDD

I think it is a matter of will. And as uncharitable as this may seem I think on both sides there is an unwillingness to give quarter for fear of loosing face (and with that authority). If you're waiting for reconcillation between Rome and the SSPX ... my only advice is: Don't hold your breath.

Dear Carole, I think it will happen and we'll see. I don't want to bet on this with you because if I win, and you lose, I'd hate to see a grown woman cry and beg for mercy! I think that as conservatism in general returns to the Catholic Church (down with the liberals! ), traditional liturgical practice, even Tridentine practice, (and also paraliturgical practices) will become more widely esteemed. The Latin Church may even have to admit that its liturgical dalliance to reflect better the "modern conditions" of humanity might have been a failure. In addition, we may even see a comeback of the other Rites of the West such as the Mozarabic, Celtic, Gallican et al. that were all based on the "back to the people, face to God" principle of the Tridentine (and all other) liturgies. There was a professor of liturgy in Spain, a priest, who said that he respects the Mozarabic liturgy "too well" to adapt it to the NO style etc. Let's see what happens and, until then, let's continue with our deep breathing techniques . . . I pray you are right, Alex. Though I fear I have little faith in the vanity of mankind. Well, that and the fact that I don't know a single SSPX adherent (in real life) who truly deisres reunion with the Holy See. They all see any compromise to regularize their status as equal to selling their souls to the devil. I pray that calmer minds prevail ... while all the time wondering if they do reconcile how many of the SSPX followers will refuse to follow the Society back to Rome?!?! Such a sad sad situation. Frankly I find quite understandable that they do not want such a reconciliation as it would eventualy lead them to merge with the Modern Church and loose what they have won.
Let's think of the seminaries for example, if they reconcile with Rome, they would gradualy loose control of their organization. Once the accusations of schism are lifted, nothig will prevent less-traditionalist people from outside (or even agents sent in purpose by the modern church) to join SSPX seminaries and monasteries and create subversion in favour modernizing reforms.
These people would also start attending their churches and if the property status of the temples is not clear, once they become a majority, they can take control of them too and hand it to the modern faction.
May St. Mark of Ephesus and St. Maximos help the Latin Traditionalist leadership so that no bad deal is accepted!

No one "wins" anything when they separate from the mother church because they know better than the Pope and the bishops in Council. It might be better that if that is their attitude, that they are doing anyone else a favour by seeking reunion that they stay away. Those who think so little of the Church might also consider why they also have not got the courage of their own convictions and follow them. If it is so bad in Christ's Church with all this corpution and vileness, then why are they trying to get back in?

Everyone baptized into Christ should pass progressively through all the stages of Christ's own life, for in baptism he receives the power so to progress, and through the commandments he can discover and learn how to accomplish such progression. - Saint Gregory of Sinai

There exists a group of Tridentine Roman Cathoilics (mostly of Italian ancestry) who hold pilgrimages and "Otpusts" (pardon my Italian ) in Bayside NY. How are they classified? Faithful Roman Catholics or Traditionalists that are outside the fold of the Roman Catholic Church? Inquiring minds would like to know... Ungcsertezs

Well, Ung, there is really no way of telling from the information you've provided.
They could be Catholics who attend the local Indult, if there is one, or could be SSPX or Sedevacantists or members of an "independent" congregation.
Do you know what church they attend?

Is it possible that these people are part of their local diocese and are attending a church which is under their local bishop?
I am guessing that such places exist in the USA. If so they just other Catholics. We have them here in Australia. we also have the other groups as well.
