A prominent Turkish journalist who campaigned for Armenian rights was shot outside his office in central Istanbul by suspected Turkish nationalists yesterday, days after saying he had received anonymous death threats.

The murder of Hrant Dink, 53, who was of Armenian descent, is likely to deal a further blow to Turkey's efforts to join the EU.

He was shot in the head and neck three times by an unidentified gunman as he was leaving the bilingual Turkish Armenian newspaper Agos, which he edited.

Witnesses said the assailant was a teenager wearing a white cap and jeans. "He shouted 'I shot the infidel' as he ran away," said Muharrem Gozutok, a restaurant owner.

The man had threats, yet where were the Turkish police. Oh well! That's how they get rid of dissidents. Well they can forget getting into the EU. frown

I recall forty or so years ago, when I crossed the Aegean and landed at Cesme in Turkey, the look the officer gave me when he heard me speaking Greek to someone in the office. He looked at my American passport and boy was he frightening. eek

It seems that 15-25 year olds are among the most zealous and numerous of Islamic militants, though perhaps that speaks more to the nature of young adults than to the nature of the Islamic militant movements.
