"And I will give unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred sixty days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks, that stand before the Lord of the earth... And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast, that ascendeth out of the abyss, shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them... And they of the tribes, and peoples, and tongues, and nations, shall see their bodies for three days and a half: and they shall not suffer their bodies to be laid in sepulchres. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry: and shall send gifts one to another, because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt upon the earth." -Revelation 11:3-4, 7, 9-10. He who has ears let him hear. I fear for both Peter and Andrew in November.

Dear Dr. Eric, When the Greeks in the Pelopenesus, (can never get the spelling right), revolted and started the Greek revolution, they became the first people to gain their freedom from the Turks. The Patriarch was immediately hung. It seems to be a habitual thing with the Turks. Zenovia

Dear Dr. Eric, I never thought of the prophets as being the Pope and the Patriarch, I always thought of it as being the two major Christian broadcasts throughout the world: EWTN and CBN or the 700 Club. But that is just my interpretation. Zenovia

Dn. Robert Shade, Father Deacon Robert! Are you asking these fanatics from the religion of peace to be consistent and rational? Me thinks they dost protest too much! :p Gordo

Logos Teen [/QB] Logos Teen, This was the first thing that struck me when I read the story and it mentioned his visit in November. It seems that the giv't of Turkey is demanding an apology. (I even read something that seemed to say that his visit was contingent upon his apology.) If that is the case, it may also be a convenient way for the Turkish giv't to save face on two levels: 1. With the rabid Muslim crowd 'cause they're taking a stand 2. With the rest of the EU and the World by "disinviting" His Holiness to prevent his assasination/martyrdom. (Even typing such things sends chills up my spine.) Viva il Papa! Gordo

Zenovia Originally, the interpretation belongs to Father Vladimir Soloviev. In his book about the Antichirst, the Pope and Patriarch are killed and drug through the streets of Jerusalem as in the Apocalypse of St. John. Thus fulfilling the Prophecy.

What an excellent article...so brilliantly and logically written! In its final paragraph: He does not believe that the Koran condones terrorism; he bears no animosity towards peace-loving Muslims; but he is worried that the aggressive ethos of authentic Islam may provoke a crisis in Western society. And if the price of making that point is a "diplomatic blunder", then so be it. Amen. In Christ, Alice

Dear Dr. Eric you said: Originally, the interpretation belongs to Father Vladimir Soloviev. In his book about the Antichirst, the Pope and Patriarch are killed and drug through the streets of Jerusalem as in the Apocalypse of St. John. Thus fulfilling the Prophecy. I say: You are making me reconsider my former opinion. I believe there was something in the prophecy that stated that the prophets will be seen in each city, and I automatically assumed that they would be in all places at all time. Well I felt, it couldn't be two people, so it must be something else. Well now I realize that with TV, one can be seen everywhere without being everywhere. Now where did I get that idea that they would be seen everywhere? Zenovia

Gordo [/QB]Yes, Viva il Papa! I would hate for the papal trip to Constantinople (yes, Constantinople) to be cancelled. With the Pokrov feastday coming up on October 1, I recommend that we pray to the Theotokos to keep our Holy Father under Her protecting veil. We fly to thy patronage, O Most Holy Theotokos; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers. O Most Holy Mother of God, save us .

I for one strongly feel that Pope Benedict XVI's comments in his address were dead on. I also believe he knows the risk of what he said but it needs to be said...Islam is swallowing up western europe at an alarming rate...especially the Pope's beloved Germany. its only a matter of time when the militant take over begins. may God bless the Holy Father.

I don't know ,but, this 'take' on the Pope and Patriarch being 'those' Prophets, is taking a stance akin to the rabid evangelical/fundamentalists that I used to hang with. and...(1) how have they tormented the people of the earth..? and, (2), how have they held back the rain...? Many still hold that the two prophets will be Moses and Elijah. Now, we are waiting for the rest of the story. mik

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: Imagine Pope Benedict asking that Patriarch Bartholomew accompany him on his visit to Hagia Sophia. One imagines that the Pope will be permitted by the Turkish authorities to pray there, even if briefly. If the Pope, when it was time to pray, asked Patriarch Bartholomew to lead, praying in Greek... and I can so imagine our Pope being gracious enough to do so... How do you think this little act would be received by the world-wide Orthodox commmunity? The first Patriarch of Constantinople permitted to pray publicly in Greek in Hagia Sophia, due to the Pope's efforts? Just my two obols. Edward
