Dear Marian,
I don't know about Weight Watchers on line, but the best you can do is stop all sugars, including breads and pasta's. Best to eat just a small amount of brown bread, (that good old peasant bread), and stick to vegetables and fish.
Use healthy oils like olive oil instead of butter, (your body needs it, and watch the MacDonalds. Don't touch them! Basically, get back to an old fashion diet of green vegetables, olive oil, etc. etc. Eat the way your grandparents did and get out of your car and walk.
When you eat meat, make sure it is lean without fat, and eat a variety of things that your body needs. Make sure you get all your protein, minerals and vitamins. Drink a little wine, it's good for you. But remember, everything in moderation. Eat small portions, and if you can, take nutritional suppliments.
All in all, you can do it Marian. May our Lord be with you.
God Bless you,
Zenovia

Dear Marian,
I pm'd you about this. I have followed an older version of Weight Watchers for atleast fifteen years now, and it is a really good program and one which allows you to live a normal life. It is never extreme like Atkins, etc. You learn to eat all the food groups and eat them every day. Since they are not available in your country, the online program looks very good, and the price, atleast in this country ($5.00 per week) can not be beat. I used to pay $13.00 a week fifteen years ago! Every other popular program is much more expensive and much more limiting. There is basically NOTHING you can not eat on Weight Watchers--albeit, in proper portions.
The key to success with this program and most weight loss programs is being religious about writing down everything you eat daily, and thinking out what you will eat from the night before or in the morning--that way you are prepared, and will not eat the wrong things just because you are starving.
Good luck and may God give you strength to get started and on your way to losing weight!
In Christ, Alice

Marian:
I had success with losing about 21 pounds in a year's time by strictly limiting potatoes and cutting out both red meat and pork. Stay away from things cooked with or containing heavy grease or fat--lard, bacon fat, etc. You might also look for low glycemic foods on the internet. Some foods make one's blood sugar spike and cause weight gain because of the way in which the body metabolizes them. There are lists that can tell you what foods are good in this area dnw what ones to avoid.
Be sure to eat oatmeal every day. It's good for you, lowers blood sugar and cholesterol, and keeps you from feeling hungry for the bulk of the morning.

I always figure the best thing one can do, in addition to watching one's diet, is to go see the doctor and get cleared for moderate exercise. Few people who do not have a healthy lifestyle (including reasonable amounts of exercise) will keep the weight they lose off. I have a friend who was very large and who lost about 100 lbs. - he has kept it off, but he exercises daily and walks instead of drives many places. He works full time and is in academia as well, and if you are work to be good at managing time, you can always make time for exercise. He's a great example of that.
I'm still an athlete who competes, but even I have to watch what I eat. I can eat a lot more when I am in training than when I am not. I rarely weigh myself, but hate unpleasant surprises when I do. No matter who you are you have to manage your weight and your lifestyle.
I agree with the previous post: oatmeal is great stuff. I eat it with a cup of tea for an afternoon snack. Wonderful stuff. At work, I get the lowered sugar instant kind. Cooks up in a tea cup. Can take a box anywhere. Re-energizes me and makes sure I don't overstuff at dinner.
Peter Forsberg (the hockey player) eats oatmeal before games, or so I read somewhere.
