Hi! Lately I have been wanting to find out more about learning to write icons and coincidentally (or not) there happens to be a class starting up in October at our local craft store. But I am unsure if this is a good route to take as I know there are people that write very questionable icons, and don't follow the rules and that is not what I want to learn!
Are there questions I could/should ask, or anything I need to look for to find out if it's a good course? I haven't been able to find anything out about the instructor on the internet.

Are there any parishes in your areaa that perhaps have sessions that teach people how to write Icons?

Andrea- I'd be very hesitant about one at an arts and crafts store. Going through a parish is the best way. Also try to view the iconographer's works beforehand. By the way, if you don't have it I highly recommend this book [ liturgica.com]. This is a Moscow-approved overview of iconography which goes pretty deep into style and the spirituality issues.

I actually have that book (A History of Icon Painting). I also recommend Constantine Cavarnos's Guide to Byzantine Iconography (there are two volumes). Not a lot of pictures but a LOT about proper understanding and writing of icons. We just finished a week-long icon workshop with people from all over the country. http://www.archeparchy.org/pdfs/2007_Sept_Texas_Icon_Workshop.pdfIt should be an annual thing based on the attendance.
