This is great news. Daniel Dinardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston has just been named a cardinal. He is very pro-Eastern and taught patristics at SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Pittsburgh. At the seminary in Houston, he brought in a Melkite priest to serve as a spiritual director. He seems to be very conscious of the need to help the Latin Church better understand Eastern Christianity.

Great news indeed!

And it could be a jolt to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., for their beloved shepherd, Abp. Donald W. Wuerl, not to be named as well.

As one of those faithful, I can tell you that I'm personally glad he wasn't named. My reasons:

1) I see no reason that the DC bishop should automatically become a Cardinal. The diocese is not especially large (same number of Catholics as Cincinnati, OH), and there is nothing distinctly "Catholic" about this town (other than the Supreme Court smile ).

2) He hasn't done anything to distinguish himself since he has been here. That's not a knock against him, just a fact that should mitigate against him automatically becoming a Cardinal.

I hope the Pope names Cardinals based more on their accomplishments and the vitality of the community they represent rather than just sticking to form every time.

But the real reason Wuerl wasn't named is most likely because Cardinal McCarrick is still an elector Cardinal, and they don't usually have two elector Cardinals from the same see at the same time.

I did surmise this as the main reason for the non-elevation of Abp. Wuerl.

However, Archbishop Emeritus of Boston, Cardinal Law, and the current Archbishop, Cardinal O'Malley, are both electors!

True, but Cardinal Law has a new position (such that it is), whereas Cardinal McCarrick's only position is Archbishop Emeritus of Washington. If a Cardinal moves on to another post, then it is not seen as against protocol to name another elector Cardinal from that see.

I still can't believe Cardinal Law is Archpriest of St. Mary Major!

I'm aggravated that Archbishop Burke of St. Louis didn't get a red hat.

St. Louis with out a Cardinal? wink

Cardinal DiNardo was a guest at the Syro-Malankara Holy Qurbono concluding our National Youth Conference. Good bishop, very supportive of the Eastern Churches. God bless him and give him wisdom.

I have a deep respect for him, I've attended several of his masses (his homilies are solid) and was in a pro-life procession he led.

It is gratifying to learn that Archbishop Daniel is "pro-Eastern"
(a clumsy term but it will do for a kind of shorthand).Does
anyone know if he has any Eastern parishes under his
jurisdiction?

As for Archbishop Burke, politics come into play. The Sacred College already has a lot of Americans in it, and the Holy Father is going to be chary of weighting it with more than he
has already. The Cardinalate is an honor, but it must also be a great burden to a residential hierarch.

There are a few Eastern parishes (at least three-Maronite, Ruthenian, and Ukrainian) within the geographic boundaries of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. However, I'm unaware of any Eastern parishes under his jurisdiction.

Blessings and cheers for Cardinal-designate Daniel DiNardo!

Our parish priest served with then-Father DiNardo in Brookline (Pittsburgh), sorry I can't remember the name of the parish.

I believe Archbishop Wuerl will be named a Cardinal, after Cardinal McCarrick reaches 80 years of age. Archbishop Wuerl has not been in DC for very long, but he does have some influence in the Vatican and his work as Bishop of Pittsburgh has been noticed. If Archbishop Wuerl were not as highly regarded, he would not be in Washington now.

There is an interesting historical footnote involving Archbishop Wuerl and the College of Cardinals.

He has participated in the conclave for the election of Pope John Paul II!

Then Father Wuerl was the priest-secretary to the late John Cardinal Wright, who was serving in the Vatican Curia, as Prefect of the Congragation for Clergy.

Cardinal Wright was confined to a wheelchair and Father Wuerl was permitted to wheel his Eminence in and out of the Sistine Chapel and to carry the Cardinal's messages to the voting table.

Speaking of Archbishops of Washington, one of the finest fell asleep in the Lord three years ago today.

Remember in your prayers today:
