I'm going as Peter Pan. And yes, I'm 20 years old, but going out downtown with a bunch of college students dressed up is not to be missed!!
I'm also really excited about going to the TLM on All Souls' Day. In the Latin Church it's a Requiem Mass with some extra cool stuff. Is it the same in the Byzantine Rite? Is a Panakhida done or anything?
I'm still looking for a Tinkerbell, though. So ladies, if any of y'all are interested...

In my neck of the woods, a 20 year old man going downtown dressed as Peter Pan would be mistaken for a Tinkerbell!  Alexandr

When we try to protest to our neighbors, our schools, and even many of our own Orthodox brethren about the origin of Halloween, we usually get indifference and humor. Most who observe Halloween laugh at any suggestion that they are participating in evil, or honoring Samhain, or entertaining dead spirits. From experience, I can say the same for Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Have you noticed that the Muslims have done a trick of their own regarding Halloween? Recently, in a public school in the U.S. where 50% of the students are Christian and 50% are Muslim, the Muslims asked to celebrate their Ramadan (putting up displays and things). Controversy soon ensued over what to do. The Muslims had a point - or did they - regarding their equal opportunity to celebrate (or promote) Islam like the Christians do for Halloween and Christmas. But here is the trick: Most *public* schools do NOT celebrate Halloween and/or Christmas as *Christian* holy days. No. They are sterile, de-Christianized days where the main characters of the stories are anything BUT what the days were meant to be. The Muslims do not have a *civil* version of their Ramadan; only a religious one. So, they can successfully demand equal (maybe?) time to promote their religious holiday like the non- or un-Christian versions of ghosts and skeletons, Santa Claus, and Easter Bunnies. Score: Christians really don't loose a celebration since they really weren't celebrating Christ in the public schools. The Muslims gained one religious holiday of theirs. Smart cookies, huh? Ed

Alexis When I think of all the things someone your age could be doing, going downtown in costume with a group of friends sounds harmless. You're only young once, so enjoy.

Just got done handing out candy . . . . what a heart warming experience !!! There were well over 100 little kids who came . . . The most creative costume was a child in a wheelchair whose parents turned it into a giant bubble making machine. The most unusual costume was a large order of McDonald's French Fires. And, of course, the best costumes were the classics: turtles, a racoon, princesses and pirates, cowboys and football players. Everybody got some candy. It was a lot of good clean fun.
