Check this out:
http://www.cts-online.org.uk/Files/CTS%20Bible%204pp_Layout%201.pdf

This is called the New Catholic Bible, published by the Catholic Truth Society in Britain. It is the 1966 Jerusalem Bible with these changes:

"Yahweh" is replaced by "Lord" through out the text;

It contains the 1963 Grail Psalms instead of the JB.

You can order a copy through Amazon UK if you have an Amazon account. Just be prepared to pay about 6 pounds in shipping and it will ship in 4-6 weeks.

This is awesome! I currently own a Jerusalem Bible, and I have two complaints about it:

1) It uses Yahweh instead of Lord (too distracting to read).
2) The Psalms aren't in my favorite translation, which is the...1963 Grail Psalms!

You know I'm going to buy it now - thanks so much!

I just ordered one. I will probably make it my second bible, behind the new Orthodox Study Bible coming out. And then the King James version for #3 of course (you can take the boy out of the baptist, but you can't take the baptist out of the boy). smile

Joe,

Possibly dumb question: did you order it via amazon.co.uk, and if so, do they ship to the U.S. and take American credit cards?

(As you can see, I've not had much experience ordering from foreign websites).

Short answer, yes. I used my amazon.com account and everything went through as far as I can tell. If I get some message from them saying that they can't sell to me, I'll let you know.

Lance,

VERY, very cool. I love the Jerusalem Bible, although I tend to favor the use of the original Hebrew names.

Here is an interesting article on YHWH:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetragrammaton

I too will make a purchse next time I'm in London visiting the CTS bookstore outside of Westminster Cathedral. Last time I spoke with one of the folks at the store, they mentioned that they are trying to set up CTS in the States as well.

God bless,

Gordo

Does it distinguish between different uses of the divine name? Or just YHWH?

Terry,

Don't know, the brochure simply states it replaces Yahweh with Lord, in keeping with recent Vatican directives.

I would like to find out if it restores some deleted passages, such as the angel stirring up the water in John ch. 5, and the phrase "the Son of Man, who is in heaven," in John 3.13. Also, that it replaces "highly favored one" with "hail, full of grace" in Luke ch. 1. Those are non-negotiable items for me, which is why I now use the Douay-Rheims or Confraternity Bibles even over any RSV edition.

I plan to order one soon, but I do not think it will replace my Douay-Confraternity as my first string bible.

Blessings,

Lance

Actuakly I like the use of Yahweh, as it is the proper name ( well, as closley as we an reconstruct it) and gives a nice touch I thought.

Then again I use a Cambridge 1611 Authorised Verison, AKA, thre King James, with Apocrypha. ( I know, I know, Deuterocannon).

So who am I to complain?

I think I might have that same edition of the KJV. I prefer LORD to the spelling out of the divine name because I think that the Jewish tradition in this matter is on the mark. Also, for me it highlights the fact that God's inner essence, nature is unknowable and indescribable.
