"Blessed Bishop Nicholas Charnetsky, C.Ss.R. and Companions@
Edited by Fr. John Sianchuk, C.Ss.R.
On June 27, 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified a group of modern martyrs of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Among them were four Redemptorists: Bishop Mykolay (Nicholas) Charnetsky (1884-1959), who spent eleven years in various prison camps ministering to other prisoners following his arrest by the Soviet secret police; Bishop Vasyl Vsevolod Velychkovsky (1903-1973), sentenced to death for refusing to renounce his faith; Father Ivan Ziatyk (1899-1952), arrested by the Communists in 1950 and subjected to two years of torture and interrogation; and Father Zynoviy (Zenon) Kovalyk (1903-1941), arrested in a church while preaching a sermon in honor of the Immaculate Conception. This book is a celebration of their stories, detailing the faith-filled lives of these four modern Redemptorist martyrs and the rest of their companions. All of these martyrs died of sufferings and torture inflicted either during World War II or after it, during the era of Soviet control prior to Ukrainian independence in 1991. Bishop Nicholas Charnetsky and his twenty-four companions represent a glorious era of martyrdom for the Ukrainian Catholic Church, and their stories give great witness to the strength of their Catholic faith.
This volume includes an appendix of biographical sketches of Bishop Nicholas Charnetsky and the twenty-four companion martyrs of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and prayers to these Ukrainian martyrs. Also included is a map of the Ukraine and more than thirty drawings and photographs. Father John Sianchuk, C.SsR., is the Provincial Superior of the Yorkton Province, the Ukrainian Rite Redemptorist Province in North America.
