My family was visiting relatives in St. Louis and we decided to go to Mass at the Cathedral. I'd been to the "old" cathedral before...but the "new" one (started in 1914) was astouding. I've stood in St. Peter's in Rome and it's the only Church I've seen that could top this one.

It's Romanesque/Byzantine and is loaded with beautiful mosaics in both Byzantine and Italian styles.

Words don't do this Basilica justice.

Well worth the trip if you're ever in the area.

I don't think anyone could doubt that it was built to glorify God

There Byzantine (Ruthenian) mission parish in St. Louis that used to have weekly Divine Liturgy in that cathedral - albeit in a side chapel (The Chapel of Our Lady, if you want to check it out on the online tour). I usually was able to attend about twice a year. Since then they have moved to a more appropriately-sized, but considerably lest glorious, location.

AWEsome, and the music is heavenly!

I know that we have said it before, but why do the new RC churches all over the world have to be modernistic and ugly? This is so much more condusive to the glory due our God!

I have had the extreme pleasure to worship there regularly. Both in the Novus Ordo Mass (The AD 2000 celebration for Our Lady of Guadalupe was fantastic!!!) and the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.

I've been there when the Archbishop lead the Mass and when the rector lead it.

The pictures really don't do it justice. smile

I've also been up inside the Dome where no one is allowed and in the "Upper Deck?" around the perimeter of the inside of the Basilica.

I really miss that Cathedral. frown

Well, it is good to see at least some architect remembers what a Catholic Church is supposed to look like! Very nice and sure beats the Klingonesque stuff I see being built in other places.

It is gorgeous! My sister recently moved to St. Louis...I am beginning to envy her. smile

Alexandr, I like that word you used: 'Klingonesque.' I'll have to remember that one, its a very apt description for an unfortunately large number of Roman Catholic churches.
