May the Feast of Saint Nicholas be a time of grace for all of the members of the Forum. May this great Bishop intercede for us and may he particularly guide our youth and young people and protect them from the many forces of evil that are out there!

Saint Nicholas pray for us and protect us - especially the children!

Amen, indeed!

You can listen to the hymns of Vespers for the feast on the Metropolitan Cantor Institute website [metropolitancantorinstitute.org].

Joy of the feast!

O kto, kto Nikolaja l'ubit,
O kto, kto Nikolaja sluzhit,
:Tomu svjatyj Nikolaj
Na vsakij chas pomahaj,
Nikolaj, Nikolaj.:

O kto, kto zhivot v jeho dvory
Pomoshchnik na zeml'i i mor'i.
:Izmet jeho ot napsti
Ne dast' jemu v hr'ichi v pasti
Nikolaj, Nikolaj.:

Nikolaj, molisja za nami,
Prosim t'a vsi so slezami,
:My t'a budem voschaval'ati
Imja tvoje velichati
Vo v'iki, vo v'iki.:

O who loves Nicholas the Saintly,
O who serves Nicholas the Saintly,
:Him will Nicholas receive,
And give help in time of need.
Holy Father Nicholas.

O who dwells in God's holy mansions
Is our help on the lands and oceans.
:He will guard us from all ills,
Keep us pure and free from sins,
Holy Father Nicholas.:

Saint Nicholas, pray for us who love you.
O Father, humbly we beseech you.
:We will always praise your name,
Your great deeds we will proclaim
Forever, forever.:

A Prayer to Saint Nicholas:

Also:

While you are there, explore the whole St. Nicholas Center site..it is absolutely WONDERFUL!!! It is also a beautiful oasis of ecumenical spirituality in a sea of Christmas materialism.

Enjoy!

Dear Friends,

A long time ago, I received a bottle from Bari with diluted Manna of St Nicholas. As my wife's cousin's father had cancer and wasn't expected to live for very long, I gave him some. He anointed his lips with it and lived another three years.

Physicians don't know everything!

And St Nicholas is my parish's patron and at the side we have a copy of "St Nicholas the Drenched."

In Kyiv, a family was returning from pilgrimage when their son fell into the Dnieper River.

They were beside themselves but a monk on the shore told them not to worry, that St Nicholas would bring their son back.

The next morning they found him in the Cathedral of St Sophia of Kyiv, on the altar in front of the icon of St Nicholas. The icon was drenched, as was the poor, sleeping boy.

It was declared a miraculous icon, was in the U.S. for a while and is now back at the St Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv.

As one student said, "He must be the patron for those who are 'all wet.'"

I've always puzzled over the English "translation" of this hymn.
I would think that the first words would be: "O who(m), who Nicholas.().." (is loved by?-who loves Nicholas), (or whom Nicholas loves?)

Does anyone have a more literal translation of this hymn available?

I must confess that my grasp of the finer details of various Slavic languages is minimal compared to the many experts here.

Thanks,

Steve

Almighty God,
who in thy love didst give to thy servant Nicholas of Myra
a perpetual name for deeds of kindness on land and sea:
Grant, we pray thee,
that thy Church may never cease to work
for the happiness of children,
the safety of sailors,
the relief of the poor,
and the help of those tossed by tempests of doubt or grief;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

And one more last addition to the Metropolitan Cantor Institute website [metropolitancantorinstitute.org]: sheetmusic for the proper hymns of Matins [metropolitancantorinstitute.org] for the feast of Saint Nicholas is now available.

Ugh! Sounds like Roman Catholics making an offensive attack on Prostopinije. Isn't it sad that Archbishop Basil had such contempt for Carpatho-Rusyn cantors that he went and hired a Roman Catholic to write the new music and then even went to hire a Roman Catholic choir to sing it? No wonder it all sounds like Gregorian Chant. Thompson & his choir just do not understand.
