What odd choices!

As Card. Egan is expected to retire soon and is said to wish
to return to Rome,I suppose he would be far more active in
the Congregation than Card. Mahoney.I am not aware that
Card. Egan has any particular knowledge of or concern for the
Eastern Churches; I may be wrong, but have reason to think I am
not (don't ask).

As for H.E. of Los Angeles, is this a sort of side-lining. perhaps?

I think this is a good choice.

Cardinal Mohany is knowledgeable about the Eastern Catholic churches. Almost every Eastern Catholic liturgical tradition is represented within his archdiocese.

He appointed Father Archmandrite Alexei Smith (Russian/Melkite) to be his ecumenical officer. Father Alexei has done wonderful work to improve relations between Catholics and Orthodox at the local level.

A few years ago, His Eminence invited Armenian Catholicos Karekin II to celebrate liturgy at the LA cathedral.

Isn't Cardinal Mahony the Bishop of the parish that had the Halloween mass?

As bad as the Cardinal is for the Latin Church, he is good for the eastern Catholics. He does however like inclusive language. Not good for getting rid of the RDL.

Yes, this is a good choice. While Cardinal Mahoney has very little respect for the Latin Rite, he holds the Eastern Rites in great esteem and as you said just about every Eastern Rite is represented in the Los Angeles area.

I believe Cardinal Egan has been greatly involved with the Eastern Catholic Churches as well...and although I can't check it at the moment I believe he is or was on the board of CNEWA...

Cardinal Egan, the Archbishop of New York, is curently on the Board of Trustees of CNEWA (International) and he is the President and Treasurer.

Cardinal Keeler, Archbishop Emeritus of Baltimore, is also on the international Board of Trustees, while concurrently serving as the President and Treasuer of CNEWA-United States.

Didn't the Latin Archdiocese of New York evict the Armenian Catholic Bishop and his congregation from their Cathedral?

I had heard that this was the case. He has also recently proposed for possible canonization the priest Isaac Hecker, founder of the Paulists, a big-time "Americanist", and confidante of the Americanist faction of bishops in the late 1800's (John Ireland-our favorite, along with Cdl. Gibbons et al).

The church which served as the Armenian cathedral was a
dilapidated muli-use parish church belonging to the
Archdiocese which, it seems, they could not afford to keep up.
The site was sold and the church demolished. Whether the
bishop had much of a congregation there I cannot say. He
certainly didn't when I visited the place one weekday. In any
case, the Armenian bishop now has a new home in the Diocese
of Brooklyn. To say that the Archdiocese "evicted" the Armenians
is unjust and uncharitable. Given the realities of urban church
life in the 21st Century, they probably had little choice.

Would it not be interesting to start a "Congregation for the Occidental Churches", to supervise and veto the affairs of the Western ecclesial communities? It could consist of, say, the Catholicos of Trivandrum, the bishop of Baia Mare, the Armenian Catholic Locum-Tenens of Leopoli, the Coptic Catholic Bishop of Assiut, the Exarch of Harbin . . . and just for good measure, Mar Bawai Soro!
