For those of us that are old enough to remember the VHS versus Betamax video format war of the 1970's which seemed to drag on for several years, the 21st century version of it has come to a quick conclusion. I just hope there were not too many here that lost by purchasing the HD-DVD format machines.  BTW, any of you still have an old Beta player in the attic? I was excited when the technology for the Blu-Ray first came out because of the advancement in the laser and the higher frequency range written on the disk.
The HD-DVD looked like it was going to pull ahead a year ago, the Play Station 3 still isn't as popular as the X-Box 360 and the technology is not as expensive. The X-Box was released a few quarters earlier and gained market share, it doesn't seem like the PS3 alone pushed the momentum into Sony's camp.
This may leave people at Toshiba scratching their heads. It's hard to know for sure what they did wrong or could have done better with marketing the technology.

Guesstimates put about 600,000 North Americans are stuck with Toshiba's HD-DVD player.
This time around Sony and its supporters come out the big winner!
For those who bought Sony's PlayStation 3, like my son, it doubles as a fine BlueRay player!

Pratically there was little difference between the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.
The Blu-Ray plays a high density disk which can store around 50GB per side. This gives the studios room to stretch the current video displays to their resolution limit. Some studios add options for multiple camera angles in addition to the commentary which would have been seen in DVDs.
Personally, I'm not going to upgrade from a DVD until the prices of the disks have fallen. Though rentals are an option, more is available in DVD.

The only issue seems to be that BR costs much more to produce, since the laser is different than the current standard DVD and HD-DVD laser. Also, the HDMI standard should be implemented and BlueRay 2.1 and beyond should be forced to be backward compatible with BlueRay 1.1, which it currently is not (meaning a whole new set of players will be needed, and the current crop will be useless).
