Hello all,

Does anyone know where I can find information about the Servant of God Venerable Papa Josif Mihali? All I know so far is that he was an Albanian Greek Catholic priest who was martyred under Communist rule. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

God bless and keep you....

Yuhannon,

You may have misread Doubting Thomas' post. He is looking for info on an Albanian Catholic martyr, not Armenian Catholic.

Doubting Thomas,

I did find a site that has a picture of Father Josif. You can find it here: http://newsaints.faithweb.com/martyrs/East3.htm

Scroll down the page until you come to #28. You will see his picture.

I was not aware of him. I'd be interested to learn more about his life as well.

Thomas,

The Servant of God Papa Josif was born in Elbasan, the center of Albanian Greek-Catholicism, which almost assuredly means that he was a parishioner of Shenjt Virgjr Meri Shqip (Grek-Katolik) - Holy Virgin Mary Albanian (Greek-Catholic) Church. Interestingly, he was born in 1912, the year that the parish was erected. His surname translates as "Michael".

From what I've been able to learn, he came from a family of priests and I believe that he did at least some of his studies in Italy, at the Monastery of Grottaferrato

He was martyred under the Communists on October 26, 1948, a month after his 36th birthday. After being tortured, he died in the province of Korce, where he was buried alive in what has been described as "the notorious swamp" of Maliq.

Many years,

Neil

The best possible tribute to the Hieromartyr Papa Josif will be the assignment of a priest to Elbasan to maintain the Greek-Catholic parish, and the renovation of the lovely church.

Bless, Father,

It's sad to hear that the parish at Elbasan is without a priest. My understanding is that, ascription of the Apostolic Administration for Southern Albania as Byzantine aside, Elbasan is the sole remaining Greek-Catholic parish - that the 8 or 9 others are Latin. Do you know if that's actually the case?

I seem to remember that, a few years ago, some hieromonks from Grottaferratto traveled to Albania, seeking to revive some parishes - but that the effort was not particularly successful.

Many years,

Neil
