New York: 17 April 2008

On Bright Saturday, 3 May 2008, a ceremonial Divine Liturgy will be celebrated jointly by clergymen of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA at St Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral at 15 East 97th Street, New York NY. His Grace Bishop Gabriel of Manhattan, Secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, and His Grace Bishop Merkury, Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, will officiate at the service, which will also include the participation of a host of clergymen of the Russian Church Abroad and of the Patriarchal Parishes in the United States. Before the service, the Miracle-working Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God will be ceremoniously brought to the Cathedral.

After Liturgy, a joint procession of the cross will be held with archpastors, clergymen, and laity. A greeting from the Russian Ambassador to the United States will be read by S V Garmonin, Consul General of the Russian Federation in New York. Representatives of the City of Moscow and officials from the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations will pray at the services.

This service will be the first of its kind following the signing of the Act of Canonical Communion between the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate in May 2007. Never before has St Nicholas Cathedral, the main church of the Moscow Patriarchate in the US, been the site of a joint Paschal service, and it is expected that over 60 clergymen and hundreds of laypersons will participate.

Clergymen of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad who wish to participate in this event can contact Protopriest Andrei Sommer at (212) 410-4258.

Editors Note:

The following comments are my own opinion; they do not represent the official point of view of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia or any body of the Patriarchate of Moscow and all Russia. Nor am I privy to or have access to any confidential or sensitive information. These are only the reflections of an ordinary Orthodox Christian laywoman on the current events swirling about her. I wish no misunderstandings in this matter.

This unity service does NOT include any official representation or participation of the so-called OCA. This is prima facie evidence that the MP does not consider it the canonical territorial church in the Americas. As all are well aware, the OCA has been reeling from a self-inflicted crisis since October 2005. This may be a sign that Moscow is finally preparing to issue the coup de grace to this moribund organisation. If Moscow lifts the Tomos issued in 1970, the OCA automatically becomes an uncanonical and schismatical body. There is canonical precedence for such a move, and if such were done, it would be the last straw for the ailing central administration in Syosset.

This is not an isolated action on the part of the MP. The OCA was kept out of the negotiations between the MP and the ROCOR that led to the historic reconciliation between them in May 2007, and no OCA cleric was allowed to participate in the ceremony in Moscow at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The lack of OCA participation in these events was not for lack of trying to intervene in the situation. Although it has never been officially confirmed, it is common knowledge that Fr Leonid Kishkovsky, one of the most vocal Renovationists in the OCA, attempted to interfere in the negotiations between the MP and the ROCOR in January 2007. They are not fools in Moscow or Jordanville. He was told that if he wished to participate in the talks, his group would have to give up its autocephaly and submit itself to the MP. This, Syosset refused to do, so, Rev Kishkovsky left Moscow empty-handed.

None of the above is unimportant or peripheral. If the OCA is the canonical territorial church in the Americas, Herman Swaiko MUST be invited, for he would be the jurisdictional bishop of the venue of the service. Since this has not happened, it is clear that Moscow no longer considers him the canonical archpastor of New York, if it ever considered him such in the first place.

This event to happen on Bright Saturday highlights the fact that Moscow never considered the OCA anything other than a Cold War expedient, a convenient tool for temporary use. The integration of the ROCOR and the MP has been surprisingly smooth and relatively without incident. There has been no major schism. This says to me that the rhetoric of the Soviet era was never heartfelt on the part of the MP, and that it always wanted reunion with its separated brethren abroad.

We have two towering figures to thank for this miracle. There shall be a secure place in church history for both Aleksei Mikhailovich Rediger and Lavr Mikhailovich Skurla. I can hear the voices from Syosset and Crestwood now. What about us? Unfortunately, the place in church history taken by Alexander Schmemann, the troubled mentor of the OCA, shall be alongside Arius, the archpriest Avvakum, and Vasyl Terlecky.

My friend Sasha Ressetar sent me a video of his parents 50th anniversary. As I was looking at the images from 50 years ago, I realise what we must do. We have taken a wrong road, we must retrace our steps, and we must rejoin the main road yet again. Our parents were on the right road, so, we can, in all humility, do likewise. I believe that there shall be great rejoicing in Russia and America when we do so. As an earnest of this, I encourage all faithful of the OCA to attend this service, and to do so as members of the one Russian Orthodox Church.

Our parents would be proud to see us do so.

Honour your father and your mother, so that your days shall be long upon the earth. Amen!

Christ is Risen!

Although I am Ukrainian Orthodox (UOCC www.uocc.ca [uocc.ca]) and want nothing to do with the OCA, I think as a Christian regardless of denomination, I have to emphasize that these views about the OCA are the views of one individual person. Who knows what personal reasons she has for her attack on the OCA?
When this item was discussed on other Orthodox discussion forums, it was pointed out by OCA clergy that since the Unity, OCA clergy have celebrated at various functions with ROCOR priests.
Secondly, it is high.ly unlikely that the MP would "take back" its bestowal of autocephaly to the OCA. It would caste the MP in an unfavourable light.
However, if the OCA itselfs implodes and the more traditional or Slavic parishes decide to join the ROCOR that is a different story. I believe something similar happened because of the forced introduction of the new calendar in the OCA in the 1980's. Thus, the remaining parishes in the OCA would be part
of a smaller OCA.

On the other subject of the joint service, I say wonderful news and I am sure all attending were greatly blessed.

Seriously? crazy

I'm not a member of the OCA, but I surely think that comparing Fr. Schmemann to a christological heretic like Arius is just ridiculous.

And I think the inclusion of archpriest Avvakum and Arius in the came category would not be viewed kindly by those in the Old Rite!

Perhaps you should have simply reported on the joyous Paschal concelebration and left your editorial comments out of it.

Not my editorial, Dave. I merely posted what was posted by this particular blogger, who, to my understanding, attends an OCA Church. My personal opinion, is that Avvakum was in the right! As far as Fr Schmemann, I would not venture to label him a heretic, just misguided.

I would caution anyone from taking too seriously the ideas of this blogger. "Barbara-Marie" or "Vara" began life as Stan Drezhlo. He was a member of the Albany parish of ROCOR at one time. I think if you study "Vara's" picture you will be able to see that he is a man. Stan's gender confusion may not necessarily negate all his opinions, but it does show that his worldview may not be firmly in reality.

Regardless of one's feelings about the OCA's place in Orthodoxy or the present crisis that it faces, the quoted piece is hate-mongering, vituperative, and unworthy of the space afforded to it. The disrespect for clergy and hierarchs is frosting on the cake. The blogger doesn't merit the attention of Eastern Christians.

Many years,

Neil

The phrase
Quote
a ceremonial Divine Liturgy
caught my eye. Can anyone explain what it means? Does any non-ceremonial Divine Liturgy exist (apart from prison-camp conditions)?

My second thought is to offer warm congratulations to all the participants - wish I could have been there. It must have been a beautiful occasion.

The ranting and raving is best ignored; it certainly was not in any way part of the Divine Liturgy or the Procession.

Fr. Serge
