Etnick Member Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,134 Likes: 1 West of Johnstown	My parish priest (OCA) always holds the hand cross during the sermon. I've never seen it done before I joined my current parish. The priest at the Liturgy (BCC) I attended yesterday did the same thing. Is this new, or just a priest preference?

Diak Member Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 7,461 Likes: 1 Kansas/UGCC	As Kolya said, I have known quite a few UGCC priests to hold the hand cross (usually the wooden beautiful hand-carved ones) during the sermon over the years. Mateusz mentions the Copts - and this practice is also very common amongst the Ethiopians as well.

It has always been a silent reminder of 1 Cor 1:23-24: Quote but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
