My parish priest (OCA) always holds the hand cross during the sermon. I've never seen it done before I joined my current parish. The priest at the Liturgy (BCC) I attended yesterday did the same thing. Is this new, or just a priest preference?

As Kolya said, I have known quite a few UGCC priests to hold the hand cross (usually the wooden beautiful hand-carved ones) during the sermon over the years.

Mateusz mentions the Copts - and this practice is also very common amongst the Ethiopians as well.

I've also seen a number of priest hold the hand cross while preaching. It has always been a silent reminder of 1 Cor 1:23-24:

Quote
but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

At the most recent Maronite liturgy I attended, the priest held the hand cross while preaching.
