These are the only Byzantine monasteries I could find in the U.S.

I'm really surprised there aren't any on the East Coast. I'd really like to visit one, but it would be nice not to have to travel thousands of miles! Are there any out there that might not advertise?

Holy Resurrection is moving East and there was a call by the bishop for the formation of a monastery just a few months back.

The UGCC has Holy Cross monastery in Washington, DC, occupying a few houses not far from Catholic University.

They operate the Icon and Book service to support the monks.

Thanks everyone,
I knew there had to be some in the Eastern US. Especially since it seems like that's where the largest population of Eastern Catholics would be.

Desertman,

The Basilian Salvatorians (Melkite) have St Basil's in Methuen, MA and the Maronites have one in ... hmmm ... Maine or Massachusetts. I'll try and find links for them tonight.

Many years,

Neil

How many monks has St Basil's in Methuen? What is the proportion between religious men come from Middle East and from USA?

Philippe,

The majority of the Basilian Salvatorians in the US are engaged in pastoral duties. At present, as memory serves, there are 3 or 4 resident at the Monastery itself - all but one of whom are American-born.

This is a link to the website [saintbasils.org]. If you want to contact them, I would recommend doing so by mail. Although the monastery is very active - conducting a lot of outreach programs, I'm not certain to what extent they maintain the actual website; it seems to vary considerably.

Many years,

Neil

Since the loss of jurisdiction in Newberry Springs, is the US Ruthenian Catholic Church seeking to establish a new monastic community somewhere?

CIX!

Predánije,

Bishop JOHN (Kudrick) set down a monastic challenge for the Eparchy of Parma.

Please go to http://www.parma.org/absolutenm/anmviewer.asp?a=25&z=5 and scroll half way down to read His Grace's letter, "A special invitation from Bishop John: Monasticism – the "very soul of the … church".

We certainly need more Newberry Springs in our Church for many reasons. One concern is for future bishops for our church. The OCA recently elected a long-time monk and Hegumen as Metropolitan (His Beatitude, Metropolitan Jonah). We too need an authentic and vibrant monastic presence and witness.
