The monks are mainly Italo-Albanians from southern Italy.
The Metro goes out to
Anagnina station on
'line A' and there is a bus service that goes to the end of the street that runs up to the Castle gates. The monastery is inside a castle.
The trains run quiet frequently on the Metro lines A & B (they only have 2 that intersect in the city under the Termini railway station). There is an 'autobus' service from Anagnina to Grottaferrata. You will have to Google for the bus timetable. I know the timetable is on the net but can't recall where I found it.
A word of advice don't carry anything in your pockets, as pick pockets make a nice living removing items from people who wont feel a thing while it happens. Keep valuables under your clothes.
