Hello everyone,

I hope to visit the Monastery of Saint Nilus of Calabria in the town of Grottaferrata near Rome. This is a monastery of my "ethnic" Church, the Italo-Greek Catholic Church. Has anyone been there before, and can give me suggestions on the best way to get there if I don't have a car (or if I don't want to get behind the wheel anywhere near Rome)?

A train stops in the nearby town of Frascati. It looks like Grottaferrata is a short distance from Frascati. Is it possible to walk from Frascati (my personal preference)? Are taxis available there? Is there a bus from Rome to Grottaferrata?

The monks are mainly Italo-Albanians from southern Italy.

The Metro goes out to Anagnina station on 'line A' and there is a bus service that goes to the end of the street that runs up to the Castle gates. The monastery is inside a castle.

The trains run quiet frequently on the Metro lines A & B (they only have 2 that intersect in the city under the Termini railway station).There is an 'autobus' service from Anagnina to Grottaferrata. You will have to Google for the bus timetable. I know the timetable is on the net but can't recall where I found it.

A word of advice don't carry anything in your pockets, as pick pockets make a nice living removing items from people who wont feel a thing while it happens. Keep valuables under your clothes.

Looks like the bus takes off from Anagnina at
06.15 06.50 08.30 11.30 14.20 16.45 17.45 and 17.50

And yes I have been warned about pickpockets in Rome, and have heard some interesting stories.......

A handy thing to know is you buy the tickets before you get on the bus and not on the bus and you enter through the rear door and exit through the front. There is a machine to validate your ticket onboard.

There is a museum at the monastery in the first cloister that is well worth the visit.

I love Rome and Grottaferrata is close. I wish I would have known about it when I was there. I definitely would have went. Otherwise, there is no special reason.
