David,

I believe that the only Eastern seminary in the US that is presently physically set up to accomodate married candidates (and I might be wrong - this is a recollection from a thread a year or so ago) is that of the UGCC. I don't know how the others which accept such candidates deal with the situation.

Many years,

Neil

Well, the normal thing to do is to have a separate section of one sort or another for the housing of married students, including their wives and children.

I don't know what the accommodations are, but there are married men at SS Cyril & Methodius in Pittsburgh.

What about for deacons who are married? I thought they take classes from the same seminaries.

For the two week sessions, I simply presumed that they left their wives at home.

I was corresponding with Fr. Jack Custer the academic dean at SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, and he said:

"we have no facilities to house married candidates. There seems to be no energy in the Archeparchy, which owns the Seminary, to do anything about that. Our only currently married seminarian lives with his wife and 2 children in a rented apartment about 15 minutes away from campus."

it is an amazing thing that a family could survive something like that. Finding new jobs and schools etc..

It would be quite a committment for a family! When a man has a call to the priesthood, instead of the Church embracing that call and laying out a smooth path for them to walk, it seems as though they just throw obstacles in the way, sometimes a great wall in the case of married men.

Still I think it is a commitment more men would make if there were more Bishops willing to ordain Married men.

In the UGCC, St. Josaphat's retrofitted some rooms for married candidates; Holy Spirit in Ottawa has had numerous married students over the years but I do no know what the living situation is - Fr. Michael (Winn) who occasionally posts on this Forum would know.

The UGCC is to be commended for upholding the eastern tradition of married men, particularly here in North America!
