Everlasting memory! Gareth Jones was one of the few brave souls along with Muggeridge and very few others who were actually reporting the truth about the Holodomor at that time.

These accounts were not popular at the time for several reasons - more "famous" reporters like the notorious Duranty were following the Stalinist propoganda hook, line, and sinker and actually printing outright disinformation.

After the Panakhyda at the end of DL today we were addressed by the Consul General , and speakers from the Scottish Ukarianian Society and other groups.

All mentioned both Muggeridge and Gareth Jones and said that they tried to tell the world of what was happening

The Consul General's final words were

"It should not have happened , it must never happen again"

We had a joint service with the Ukrainian Orthodox who came up the hill to the Famine Memorial in the grounds of the UGCC church and both priests conducted the service. Sadly it was not well attended by the Ukrainian community, just the very old people of both churches.

That is very sad to hear. I remember Fr. Wally talking about it the night before.

Our normal attendance is about 30 - I think some came from the other Scottish UGCC Groups/Communities but we had about 200 , maybe more there - the Church was well occupied. smile

I have just found the population stats for Ukrainians here in Australia. Only 620 people indentified themselves as Ukrainian in my state in 2006. We have about 2 million people in this huge state of Western Australia. 80% live in or close to the state capital of Perth. It was a terrible shame so few were present for the memorial service. I suppose it means we have to think of ways to get them to church, as clearly we are loosing them somewhere out there.
