I've liked trains all my life. Here's a video of the largest operating steam locomotive in the world. The Union Pacific Challenger 3985.

What a sight it must have been to see these everyday. They look like they're alive!

I love those old trains, too. We have several steam locomotives that run excursion trains in the area. Of course, I know the range, complexity, maintenance, cost, etc. of the steam trains can not compete with diesel electrics. However, I am glad some of them have been restored and still operate.

I've had my small Christmas display up since October, which includes my PRR K-4 Steam locomotive. Any kid who grew up in and around the Steel and Coal Mining towns of Pennsylvania never out-grows their love of trains. I use to take the Amtrak train from Pittsburg to Philly and J-town to Altoona countless times. The "Horseshoe Curve" was a strategic ammunitions highway during WWII. Nazi Germany tried several times to blow up any part of the Pennsylvannia Railroad lines that shipped the American armour, vehicles and munitions supplies. When we use to "walk" to and from school (yes, walk back in the day), we always walked on the RR tracks and trestles.

"All 'board"! grin

I would have liked to have been there, or to see it in action when it is out of testing.

I'd like to see it also! I've only seen the Youtube video. A steam engine stopped in our city about 15 years ago, but I didn't get to see it in action. frown

I particularly like the older locomotives, pre 1880. Anyone into HO or N Gauge ?

Here's a train song I remember from TV a long time ago. Anybody else remember this?

Hi yall:

If any of you come down to North Carolina you might want to check out the New Hope Valley RR

Check out the link below. For you folks from Pennsylvania who are into steam locomotives, you might want to check out the first entry in the equipment roster.

Hey Guys,
Have any of you checked out the new show on the History Channel? It's called "Extreme Trains" and it airs on Tuesdays @ 10pm9c.
If you go on their website you can watch a few clips from the show and read a little about the host. I have seen a couple of episodes and they are really exciting and informative. Hope you all will get a chance to watch!

Some steam trains in the East Tennessee area.

A video of one in the Dollywood amusement park, nearby.

There is also a small steam locomotive that pulls a train at the Knoxville Zoo, but I don't have pictures of it.

Here's another good video. This is the Norfolk Western 611.

Unfortunately, Norfolk Southern who owns the locomotive, canceled their steam program 15 years ago. Now it just sits in a museum. How sad.

Here's a pic that would give the greenies of the world a nightmare! However, it was taken in 1968 before anybody knew what "green" was!

This same loco will be featured on December 9th on the History channel show "Extreme Trains".
