Tomorrow is the 50th anniversary of the tragic fire at Our Lady of the Angels School in Chicago that claimed the lives of 92 children and 3 teaching sisters and led, ultimately, to major improvements in school fire safety codes throughout the US. As a 6th grader at the time, half-way across the country, I still remember the horror and fear myself and my classmates felt in hearing of the fire and the solemnity of the prayers we offered for those killed.

May the memory of those killed in this horrible tragedy be eternal and may God forever bless the heroic men and women who saved so many others from the same fate.

It was the "news" all day yesterday here in Chicago, highlighted by stories of those who survived and of those who went to the school to help save lives.

May all those who perished rest in peace!
