My father's parents came from Cork - Ryans and Dunleas from Lisgoold and Foleys and Mahonys from Rathcormac, both near Fermoy. Most of my Dad's first cousins are in Fermoy yet. My granduncle, Con Ryan, namesake of my father and I, came to the US as it seemed a better choice than having a price on one's head.
My mother's parents emigrated from Donegal and I have cousins both there and in Derry still, as well as my sister, brother-in-law, nieces and nephews (my brother-in-law is from Derry, they met there, and after a few years here emigrated back).

We do seem to have a lot of Corkmen or their descendants wandering about this forum. My great-great-grandfather Callahan came from Mitchelstown in East Cork, although I can find no record of his birth/baptism there. It's a mid-Cork family, so he was probably born there. Ed, Catholic births were not required to be civilly registered until just post Famine, so often weren't. Church baptismal records before that time are scarce as well. Many years, Neil

My paternal great-great grandmother was of Irish descent, and my maternal great grandmother hailed from the rather large Jewish community in Dublin, with a last name like Kaplan I doubt if they ever quite fit in over there.
