I've seen pictures of Metropolitan Vladimir of Kyiv wearing a black mantiya for Lenten services, but not a Patriarch. Is this an old custom or is this another sartorial innovation by the new Patriarch? (See the new cowl!)

It's not precisely the blessing of Chrism, which the Patriarch will serve during the Divine Liturgy on Holy Thursday; what he is doing here is blessing the preparation (which involves cooking) of the ingredients of the Holy Chrism.
