I decided that this might be the time to try to get a bearing on technology and our posters here on the Byzantine Forum. By the number of posts and what is being put up not only here on the forum, but also on the internet, I would be curious to know exactly what we might have here. Depending on the results, I may actually post a more refined poll later on. I would also be curious as to your thoughts after you have voted and viewed the results. Have fun! I readily admit to being somewhat of a Luddite....the Pennsylvania Dutch saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" describes me. I did not get my first computer (a Mac Performa OS7) until late 1994. And after having accumulated more than a decade of Claris/Appleworks files I have clung to OS9 rather than "upgrade".
That said, I find the internet a wonderful tool for parish communications. Web site, group emails, and Iconograms through the GOAA website are excellent means of keeping in touch.

My first computer was a 4 MHz XT and by the time I was nine I learned all the DOS commands. I've forgotten most of them but I still play some of the dos games like nibbles, gorilla, and Doom with DosBox.

Terry, I probably can top that on a couple different levels. My first computer was an Apple IIc with a single floppy drive with a whopping 128K of RAM. I still have it in a storage box and it still works. I have the programs for it still also. My first PC was also a XT, and I still have some of the software for it in another storage box. I wonder if anyone still would want WordPerfect 5.1 on 5.25 floppy disks? Oh, how I hated that program! And yes, I still remember most of my DOS and Apple ProDOS commands. My technology needs and demands for my work have evolved that I am using both platforms, Mac and PC using programs that were only dreams two decades ago. In IC XC, Father Anthony+

Wrote a book on a Mac SE with a 68000 processor, 256 KB of RAM and a whopping forty meg hard drive. For those who don't remember, the SE was an all-in-one with a 9" B&W screen, floppy drive, serial and SCSI port. My word processing program was MS Word 5.1, probably the best of the breed. When I needed a coffee break, I could punch "Repaginate" and then excuse myself for fifteen minutes. I paid $2700 for that thing. I've pretty much paid $2700 for every Mac I have ever bought--but each one was two orders of magnitude more powerful than the last, so for the same $2700 (actually worth about $1800 in 1984 dollars), I am getting about 100,000 times more computing power today.

Mine was an Apple IIe - acquired back in 1983 at a reduced price in conjunction with a local bank's promo for opening a 3 year CD (back when banks actually paid interest on those). I faithfully scoured the various computer magazines and, keystroke by keystroke, entered all of the code for the various utilitarian and/or fun programs that were featured in each issue. When I managed to build my own version of "what animal am I thinking of?" - using AppleBasic (I think that was what it was called), my uncle Tommy - then 66 and enraptured by technology - and my oldest daughter Katy - then 7 and enraptured by her Dad - jointly marveled at my genius. I, myself, was pretty darn pleased Many years, Neil (who can also remember when he got his first electric typewriter and thought that it and Ko-Rec-Type were the greatest inventions ever produced by human hands

OK, don't laugh! My favorite computer that started out with Windows 95, just died, and it was my fault it did. I had taken care of it, suddenly decided to empty out files and transfer some of them, but I forgot to empty the trash, and used all the memory that was left. It died with Windows XL on it. Now I am still getting use to a laptop with Vista on it.
It did good!

I had the beta version of Win 95 in 1994, I thought it was so cool.

I use 5 OS combinations on one machine. I've a mac, and use MacOS 10.5, Apple ProDos 8, WinXP, MSDos 6.22, and DosBox (which emulates MS DOS 5.x). If I could find my Win 3.1 installs, I'd be using that, too.
I have a bunch of old hardware lying about, too. A newton 130, an old laptop, 2 old Mac desktops, a working but not set-up Win98SE box, an Apple IIGS, and stored, an Apple IIe, a Kaypro 2 CPM box, and a TS1000 with a keyboard failure.
Plus I sometimes hit the net from my Wii...

You're not the only one. I was sorely peeved when WordPerfect Corp. discontinued WP for Mac. It did what I wanted, when I told it to, and did it in half the memory and half the drive footprint as Word, with easier access, and a full-fledged draw module as well!

Interesting numbers so far. In some ways, our posters are bucking market trends, i.e. the number using Windows VISTA, while a few others are below the market trend, i.e. laptops vs desktops. It will be interesting to observe the numbers, as more participate. I also have to congratulate so far our two resident technological cavemen for being able to complete the poll.
