Guys,
We went up to the show on Saturday. It was very nice. I'm not sure how many entries there were, but they were in many media, and a nice mixture of amateur & professional. There were some especially nice (in my view) photograpy pieces - both "straight" photos and "manipulated" (I don't know the technical terms). Some of the "manipulated" ones were computer-tweaked, and some were the result of a process that uses polaroid emulsions???? The first place winner in the photography category was one of the latter, and it was exquisite. There was also a really cool stained glass window, and many, many pieces in a variety of media that showed much work, talent & faith.
St John's is built so they can pull a locking divider across the space in front of the iconostasis & make the church a multipurpose room. This space was filled with items from the Doctor's extensive modern Jewish & Holocaust art collection. He gave a talk on Saturday that I caught maybe half of. The range of mood, rhythm, emotion and technique represented by what he brought was amazing.
I honestly expected to go up and see my quilt as a backdrop for the "real" art. I was totally stunned to see two blue ribbons near it, and no other pieces in close enough proximity to claim them. **gulp** My quilt got Best of Show

.
I don't have any pictures of it yet - if I get any & can somehow load them (maybe we'll finally hook up the scanner????) I'll post it if there's interest.
There was also a silent auction for a variety of items.
Anyway, I think the show is a marvelous way to bring the community into the church, an opportunity for evangelism, and a really nice effort. St. John's is a very compact church, but the people there are dynamite, and they do a LOT in that space!
Still shocked - but grinning,
Sharon
