Given the recent thread about this church, I thought some members might find this of interest. The segment on the "Russian Apostolate" begins about 2/3 through the video.

It crashed my browser. I'll try again later.

What do they mean by "Apostolate"? To me, that term implies a mission to somebody, in this case, the Russians. But only a handful of the people at St. Michaels are Slavs, let alone Russians, and they seem to think their own apostolate is bringing the Orthodox faith to the people of New York, regardless of ethnicity. It is confusing and misleading to refer to a Church as an apostolate.

Well, I got it to play, and while it is a rather nice profile of Saint Michael's, it creates more confusion than enlightenment. One gets the impression that St. Michael's is just some sort of outreach mission of the Archdiocese of New York, and its description of Russian political and religious history is just a bit, um, wobbly.

I am sure the people who made this film mean well, but they should get someone to vet their stuff before it goes up on the web. I mean, "Later in the show, we're going to take a look at how this apostolate celebrates its Mass". How nice. Would it kill them to speak of the "Russian Catholic Church", as Father Roman does? Why do they have to speak of the "Russian apostolate"?

And maybe they could get a couple of presenters with just a tad more gravitas?

I've had no success in playing the video - it plays about 20 seconds, take about 3 minutes to recuperate, and then plays another 15 seconds. For that, I lack the patience.

An "apostolate" need not necessarily be out to convert anyone to or from anything - a group sees a need for a particular work, rolls up its collective sleeves, and starts to do something.

On the other hand, I've both served at and attended Saint Michaels on immumerable occasions over the decades, and no one gave me the impression that it was "an apostolate"; it is a parish (or quasi-parish, if one wants to be technical) to serve the needs of Russian Greek-Catholics and others.

When it starts to play, press "pause", let the entire video load, and then press "play". The video plays well enough once the entire thing has been loaded into your buffer. The entire video is 28 minutes long, and the St. Michael's segment begins around 17 minutes in.

The narrators try to give the impression that the parish is really more of a mission to help Russian immigrants, but even Father Roman himself (not a Russian) states that most of his parishoners are neither Russians nor Slavs, and many of the people interviewed are neither Russians nor Slavs, but either Latin Catholics or other Western Christians drawn to the Russian Byzantine Tradition. If the St. Michaels has an "apostolate", it would be to bring the glories of the Russian Byzantine rite to the people of New York, and provide a home for those who wish to live in the Tradition.
