Holy Ghost Parish of Cleveland OH, whose history and majestic interior combine to make one of the glories of the Byzantine Catholic Metropolia, will be closed after it celebrates its centennial in November.

I offer my humble prayers to the members; that they will be comforted and find a new home in our Tradition.
I'm curious about something. Does the parish have a cemetery? What happens to it after a church closing? Is there an endowment established for perpetual care?

Fr Deacon Paul The cemetery is located at Holy Spirit parish a few miles away in Parma.

These closings have to stop. The church needs to evangelize the community around them.

These closings have to stop. The church needs to evangelize the community around them. See my posting on the thread "Catholics Protest Church Closings in Cleveland". There literally is no community to evangelize--the city is shrinking, its population aging and getting poorer. You can't get blood out of a stone.

What will happen to that gorgeous icon screen?? It should be given to St. Mary's parish on the same side of town. They've never had one. Currently they have four stand up icons.

Closures are bound to occur based on shrinking demographics. The fact that this is occuring at a scheduled date (well in advance) signals there is/was some pastoral sensitivity taken. Which bodes well. Grant O Lord, peace, health, and happiness to the parishioners of Holy Ghost. And for those who have gone to eternal rest O Lord, remember them forever.

I would imagine a building of that age and architectural/cultural significance is on the historic preservation list (assuming Cleveland has one). Given that the church is closing, if the building must be preserved, what alternative uses have been proposed for it?

Good ole American sprawl. I guess the Ruthenians could not be outdone by the Latins in inner-city church closings. I've been to thousand-year old churches in Europe and we cannot even keep them open for a hundred years in this country. Shame, shame, shame! Isn't this the flagship Byzantine Catholic church in the Cleveland area? Why not close a couple of suburban parishes instead? After all, a person can drive to Holy Ghost in a half hour from anywhere in Cleveland.

Most of them are museums, even when still officially churches, because nobody worships in them anymore. Also, most of them are owned by the government, one way or another.

Another nice shot is here [ flickr.com] . Can't seem to find a photo of the well-regarded interior. And a bit of history here [ tremonthistory.com].
