I'm surprised there's been no news on the Consistory yesterday and the creation of fifteen new Cardinals of the Church. Congratulations to the new fifteen cardinals, and the twelve cardinal-electors, which includes Cardinal O'Malley of Boston and Cardinal Levada of the CDF. At the meeting of the College of Cardinals with the Pope on Wednesday, the Church's relationship with Islam was discussed, as well as how best to mend the SSPX situation. Detailed reviews of both can be found at www.whispersintheloggia.blogspot/ [ whispersintheloggia.blogspot.com] (mainly for the Consistory and creation of cardinals) and www.rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/ [ rorate-caeli.blogspot.com] for information on what went down as to the SSPX. You mean you think there are more cardinals to come?
By adding 12 cardinal-electors, Benedict has put the number of cardinal-electors at the "maximum number" set by Paul VI (or was it Pius XII?). John Paul II went past this limit a few times but, judging from this first round, it seems like Benedict wants to stick to the standard formula.

But remember he is the Pope and he can increase the number if he wants to. Stephanos I The merely jurisdictional acts of a pope are not binding on another elected Pope.

"Now 120 Electors
VATICAN CITY, MARCH 24, 2006 (Zenit.org).- The College of Cardinals now has a total of 193 members, after the latest consistory.
Of the total, 120 are would-be electors, those under 80 years old, who could participate in a conclave to elect a new pope.
Europe now has 100 cardinals (including 60 electors); North America 20 (with 16 electors); Latin America 32 (with 20 electors); Africa 17 (with 9 electors); Asia 20 (with 13 electors); and Oceania 4 (with 2 electors).
Italy, with a total of 40 cardinals (including 21 electors), continues to be the country with the largest number of cardinals, followed by the United States with 15 (including 13 electors), and Spain and France, both of whom have 9 cardinals (and 6 electors each).
Poland has 8 cardinals (4 electors); Brazil 8 (3 electors); Germany 6 (5 electors); Mexico 5 (4 electors); and India 5 (3 electors).
Countries with 3 cardinals are: Switzerland (1 elector), Argentina (1 elector), Colombia 3 (3 electors), the Philippines (2 electors), and Australia (1 elector).
Of the cardinals, 168 were elevated by Pope John Paul II and 10 by Pope Paul VI. Benedict XVI installed 15 today.
The eldest cardinal is Johannes Willebrands, 96, retired archbishop of Utrecht, Netherlands, and former president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.
The youngest cardinal is Peter Erdo, 53, archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest.
The dean of the College of Cardinals is Angelo Sodano, Vatican secretary of state, and the vice dean is Roger Etchegaray, retired president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace." FROM ZENIT

The various news sources cite 2 American Cardianls being created. Actually, there are 3. John P. Foley, the head of the Vatican Commission on Socialogy and Communication hails from Philadelphia and is a personal friend of mine.

Mike, Are you sure Archbishop Foley was created a cardinal? I'm pretty sure this isn't right. Can we check on this? I didn't see this mentioned anywhere and haven't seen any pictures of this. Logos Teen

Although I've always loved Archbishop Foley. He always seems to be so happy go-lucky.
And if I were a Curial member at the Vatican, I'd be hardpressed to be either happy or go-lucky!
He's also one of the view priests or hierarchs that isn't a raging dogma-hating liberal who's interviewed often by the big networks. Some of the others I'm thinking of are Fr. Dominic Crossan and Fr. Tom Reese.

If Archbishop Foley is a friend of anyone reading this, please ask him to cut the voice-overs to an absolute minimum. The Bible, for pity's sake, is available in electronic form so the Bible readings at Papal Masses can easily be given in English, French or whatever in the form of subtitles, allowing those who wish to hear the Deacon or reader. The same goes in spades for the liturgical texts - I've often wanted to throw something heavy at the tv set because I'm sick of hearing somebody outshouting the Pope in English when I want to hear the Pope in Latin - for that matter, simply announcing that the Pope is using the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th Eucharistic Prayer should be quite sufficient - or do people no longer have copies of the Missal?

Dear Incognitus, Good advice! But, still, you can't help but like Abp. Foley. At least I can't, anyway. I think it would do the people some good to have zero commentary during the Papal Masses! Especially when Marini gets the boot... Logos Teen

Incognitus I could not agree more. With the glut of polyglots in the employ of the Holy See, one of them must be able to provide simultaneous subtitles in any of the various languages. Instead of providing a prayerful experience, the cacophony of voice overs is more like Babel.

AMEN!
And if it's not Abp Foley, it's that british-accented woman from Vatican Radio who just groans on-and-on-and-on.
During the JP2 Novena of Masses last year, I wanted her to just keep her trap shut when the "Marionite Eastern Orthodox Rite" was doing their Qurbono.
Eeesh!
