As a corollary to the thread on the Melkites and Vatican I, I had a related question. I think it might work better as a separate thread.
Given that the Melkite Patriarch, and the entire Synod of Bishops with him, accepted Pastor Aeternus with the qualifying clause from the Council of Florence attached: "except the rights and privileges of Eastern patriarchs" and given that he is the leader of the Melkite Church, how does that practically affect the theology and belief of the Melkite Church and her members? If our Patriarch, and the entire Synod of Bishops with him, only accepts the dogma with the added understanding of the Council of Florence, is that the official position of the Melkite Church to this day? Does that mean that we Melkites are in union with the Pope of Rome and accept the dogmas of Vatican I but only as they would have been understood in the first millennium?
This also relates to the Zoghby Initiative and the document that was accepted by the Synod of Bishops in 1995. My gut tells me that the Melkite Church officially accepts Vatican I but with disclaimers that are tolerated by Rome. Would that be an accurate way of stating it?
It's something that has been on my mind, and I'm guessing there really isn't a definitive answer at this point. However, I wanted to throw it out and get some guidance on it.
Thanks in advance for your responses. I look forward to hearing what you have to say.
May God bless you!

Scott,
It is my impression, from the continued support of the Zoghby Confession by the Melkite Synod, as well as repeated statements on the part of His Beatitude Patriarch Gregorios, that the Melkite Greek Catholic Church feels Pastor Aeternus is effectively null and acts in full accord with the ancient rights and privileges of a true patriarchal Church. The Melkite Church will not repudiate Pastor aeternus because they feel it is not necessary to do so, and would have no cause to do so unless the Holy See tried to interfere in the internal affairs of the Melkite Church.

Thanks, Stuart, for the response. That makes complete sense and agrees with what I thought might be the case. I appreciate your taking the time to answer.
Does anyone else have any thoughts on this matter?

Interesting thoughts. I can't speak for the Melkite position, but I found this article *** by a Russian Catholic professor interesting.

The remainder of the posts from this thread - being as they are unrelated to the thread title - have been split to a separate thread and moved to the Town Hall Forum.
The new thread has been retitled Petrine Views.
