I have noticed when males are depicted in icons, they are either wearing sandles or no shoes. Women are depicted wearing shoes or slippers (no part of the foot is seen). Is this the norm? What is the significance for this?

Hmmm... that post was a while ago, I hope you're still out there ...

I have one tidbit. My understanding is that the Mother of God is often shown wearing red slippers based on the ones that were worn by the empresses of Eastern Rome.

What I'd like to know is what it means when a man's sandal appears to be falling off.
