A childhood friend recently sent me a Latin-rite devotional "Medal of the Holy Face". It appears to have originated with private revelations to the now-beatified Sr. Maria Pierina de Micheli. The enclosed leaflet encouraged attempts of our part to "make reparation" to the Holy Face of Jesus. I have noticed this same advice in connection with private revelations re. the Sacred Heart, the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Divine Mercy devotion as proposed by St. Faustina. But I can't for the life of me figure out how on earth I could "make reparation" for anything, other than trying to undo the harm caused by my own sins.Anybody got insights into this?

Compare it to fasting and self-denial. Does that make sense? Why do you fast?
What did Jesus teach regarding "prayer and fasting?"

It's the intention to "stand in the breach", so to speak, and offer prayer and sacrifice for one's erring brethren. This spiritual effort goes back to the beginning. Think of Job making offerings for the sins of his sons and daughters while feasting.

Ultimately, of course, there is only one great act of reparation that counts for all of us: the Passion of Christ. Our little acts of reparation are offered in union with his self-oblation and graciously accepted by Heaven.

The language used in devotional literature should not be taken too literally.
