The Divine Liturgy is celebrated in the Russian Slavonic rite. The first community of laymen of the Eastern rite was the ‘Knights of the Holy Cross’ founded on 14 Sept 2001 and led by Pavel Parfentiev. It was under the patronage of St Michael the Archangel. Its first Liturgy was celebrated by Fr Sergey Golovanov from Omsk on 31 Jan 2002; and its second, on 9 June that year by Father John Soles, pastor of St Michael’s Russian Byzantine Church in New York. Afterwareds, Fr Sergey made two visits a year all the way from Siberia to celebrate the Divine Liturgy there. In August, 2005, those who did not wish to enter the community of knights formed that of Sts Cyril and Methodius and began holding a regular Liturgy in September. In November, 2005, the two communities merged. They now have about 25 members.

MOSCOW:

History:
Founded in 1995 by Vladimir Belov (d 8 Mar 2004) at Apartment 461, 17 Felewski Boulevard, Moscow, the chapel could only hold up to 15 faithful. It was served by Fr Stefano Caprio, a graduate of the Russicum in Rome who was carrying out his ministry in Russia. After his Russian visa was not renewed in April 2002, the parish no longer had a regular priest. Hegumen Innokenty Pavlov, a former Russian Orthodox priest who recognizes papal leadership, but has not been officially received by the Catholic Church, has since often celebrated the Holy Liturgy there. The parish has not received official recognition in the new structure of Byzantine Catholic Church in Russia. Still, it played an important role in the revival of the church, many of whose priests have at one time or another celebrated the Liturgy there.

History:
Founded by Nicolai Derzhavin, it included several faithful. However, they have had no pastoral support, and there is no recent news of this community. Its members mostly attend local Russian Orthodox services.

Tel./fax: (3466) 21 16 47
Services (temporary): Builders St 2/2, kv 65, Megion.
History:
The Divine Liturgy is celebrated in the Ukrainian rite.
Megion is in the area where oil was discovered in 1961 and it attracted many workers from different areas, including many western Ukrainians. In 2001, a Ukrainian Catholic priest, Fr Vasily Potochnyak, visited his sister who lived in the city and met many other Ukrainian Catholics there, who had no spiritual assistance. On 30 April, he celebrated the first Byzantine Catholic Easter Divine Liturgy in the city, and over a hundred people turned up from Megion and the neighbouring cities, Nisnnevarstovsk, Surgut, Raduzhny. When he left, Fr Visily promised not to forget the needs of the people of Megion, and he returned a few months later with a young pirest, Fr Ivan Lega. Fr Lega began his ministry among them but later moved to Nishnevartovsk. At first, services at Megion were celebrated in the apartment of one of the parishioners, but later an apartment was rented to serve as a chapel. In 2006, a Slovakian priest, Fr Matos Marcin, came to work in the parish, but because of difficulties over his visa, he had to leave a year later. Afterwards, Frs Ivan Kovba and Peter Pavlishin served the community from neighbouring cities. Now they have a resident pastor, Fr Basil, and are attempting to build their own church. The community has about fifty faithful, almost all from the Lvov region of Ukraine. .

History:
The Divine Liturgy is celebrated in the Ukrainian rite.
Like Megion, Nisnevartovsk is in the oil-producing region of Russia and has attracted many Ukrainian immigrants. Ukrainian Byzantine Catholics from Niznevartovsk were among those who attended the Easter Liturgy celebrated in Megion by Fr Vasily Potochnyak on 30 Apr 2001. Soon afterwards, Fr Ivan Lega moved to Nishnevartovsk and started creating a community. Services took place in the homes and offices of the faithful until a chapel was set up in the house where the priest lived. The Greek-Catholic parish was officially established by Bishop Werth in 2002, and after repeated attempts was finally registered with the state as a Roman-Catholic community in 2007. Land was allocated for the construction of a church. Bishop Werth, Odinary for Byzantine Catholics in the Russian Federation, made a pastoral visit to the community at Easter 2005. The parish is growing. At Easter service in 2009, there were about one hundred people; at Easter, 2010, there were two hundred. This parish constructed a new chapel, which was consecrated by Bp Werth on 2 May 2010, but plans are still being made to build a church. BM_2_

History:
The Divine Liturgy is celebrated in the Ukrainian rite.
Ukrainian Byzantine Catholics were first exiled to Omsk in 1947, and first emerged from the underground in 1989. Ukrainian priest Fr Joseph Svidnitsky, who ministered in Siberia from 1992, founded this parish in 1995 for Ukrainian Catholics, and the liturgy was first celebrated in the local Roman Catholic church. A visit to the parish from Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Bishop Julian Gbur in 1998 gave moral support to the need for Byzantine Catholics to acquire their own church. That year, Bp Joseph Werth appealed to the German Bishops’ Conference Renovabis for funds to buy a building. An abandoned former mosque in bad condition was purchased, and reconstructed with the help of Catholic charities Renovabis, Kirche in Not and the CNEWA. The first liturgy was celebrated on 14 Oct 1998. On 30 June 1999, it became one of the officially registered parishes in Russia.

History:
The Divine Liturgy is celebrated in the Ukrainian rite. Every Sunday, over 100 people come to the Liturgy (Bp Werth, 29 Feb 2006).
This is the senior parish in the modern revival of the Byzantine Catholic Church in Russia. The mass deportation of clergy and faithful to Siberia brought many Byzantine Catholics to Prokopievsk in the 1940s. From 1947 to 1960, Fr Ivan Naberezhny undertook pastoral work among them. At the end of the 1950s, a Ukrainian Greek-Catholic priest, Father Vassily Rudko, C.Ss.R, arrived in Prokopyevsk and began an underground ministry among Greek-Catholics. In 1984, he was joined by a young colleague, Fr Jaroslav Spodar, C.Ss.R, who, while working in the mines, was able to minister to believers here and to visit those in the cities of the surrounding Kuzbass region. In 1990, Byzantine Catholic priests Frs. Victor Danilov from Grodno and Marian Sergey Gaek also arrived.
This parish was established in 1974 and, after several unsuccessful attempts, was finally officially registered in 1991. Byzantine services are held in the local Roman Catholic Church. There is a monastery of Redemptorist priests of the Byzantine rite from the L’viv province in Ukraine. A community of nuns from Ukraine was established in 2003, and still serves the parish. The parish has 380 people on its lists, about half of whom are active. In addition, there are another 70 in the other towns and villages served from Prokopievsk, of whom 30 take part regularly in prayers.

Frs Alexey Barannikov and Andrey Zverev, who now serve Byzantine Catholic parishes in the region, both came from this parish.
On 1 August 2007, a large new parish building for the Byzantine Catholic Community in Prokopyevsk was blessed by Bishop Joseph Werth, Ordinary for Greek Catholics in Russia. It will be used for meetings and for the catechesis of adults, youth and children.

Thank you so much for providing this!

I had been very curious to know how many current Russian Greek Catholic communities existed in Russia itself. I am very happy to see that the work and vision of Blessed Leonid Feodorov continues.

I agree with your statement above. What I wish is that an Exarch at least be appointed for the Russian Byzantine Faithful. That would fulfill Blessed EXARCH Leonid Feodorov's true vision. As I hope the same for your people of Greece.
