It used to be on the calendar here in Australia until the early 1970s when laws banning fireworks (in the hands of the public) came in. The occasion had become one of letting off fireworks instead of having the bonfires. Every year there were accidents with children having fireworks explode while in their pockets and the nation has a great fear of fire, so it did not take much to simply die out. From what I can gather from family in the UK a lot of the tradition has gone out of the occasion and Halloween has arrived in a big way in recent years and is so close, as to put the 5th in it's shadow.

I remember 20+ years ago in England Bonfire Night was still done (with public-service announcements on television warning about fireworks accidents) and Halloween unknown (it was local to some places, not where I was).

Guy Fawkes Day is a central event of English anticatholic mentality. The bonfires were meant to burn the Whore of Babylon [ answers.com] which of course was the Papacy. Because of its roots I think it is good that it is dying out.

Actually, it is good to remember that just one stupid, misguided act--like trying to blow up the House of Commons--can poison the well for an entire group. English Catholics would have had an easier time if men like Guy Fawkes had not tried to undermine the government in the name of the faith.
Also, the English these days aren't anti-Catholic, they're just anti-Christian (and anti-semitic, too). On the other hand, it's pretty safe to be a Muslim.

Yes, last year during Ramadan the Brits were on the verge of banning school lunches for all children on the basis that it would cause a hardship for the Muslims. My oldest daughter married a boy from Sandy Valley, maybe 50 miles from here. Small area, individualistic, and farily described as "redneck." On the 4th of July, there is a general amnesty for any type of firework, legal or illegal. At the field adjacent to the fire department, where they direct in what direction everything will be launched. With all of the trucks ready. It works much better than tracking folks down . . .
