Hopefully, I am not asking questions that have been asked recently. I could not find any indication that they have. If they have, I apologize for being redundant.
How does the process of confession in the Eastern Catholic Church take place? I have the impression that it is somewhat public, rather than in a confessional as found in the Latin Church. Do various eastern churches handle it differently from each other? For instance are the Ruthenians different than the Melkites? Are any of the churches similar in format to the Latin Church? Is there some form of penance that follows? Thanks, in advance.

Perhaps the nature of my original questions were to complex or confusing. Please let me rephrase. How does confession in the Eastern Catholc Churches differ from that of the Roman Catholic Church.

Sorry nobody responded earlier. I personally haven't been to confession in the Byzantine Rites yet, but I do know what Wikipedia tells me. Confession does not take place in a confessional, but normally in the main part of the church itself, usually before an analogion (lectern) set up near the iconostasion. On the analogion is placed a Gospel Book and a blessing cross. The confession often takes place before an icon of Jesus Christ. Orthodox understand that the confession is not made to the priest, but to Christ, and the priest stands only as witness and guide. Before confessing, the penitent venerates the Gospel Book and cross, and places the thumb and first two fingers of his right hand on the feet of Christ as he is depicted on the cross. The confessor will often read an admonition warning the penitent to make a full confession, holding nothing back.
