This is a deeply disturbing and tragic story, important to read in its entirety.

Egyptian Man Gets Death Sentence for Killing Christians
A court in southern Egypt has sentenced a Muslim man to death for his role in the killing one year ago of six Coptic Christians and a Muslim policeman.
The man, Mohamed Ahmed Hussein, is one of three charged in the drive-by shooting that occurred January 6, 2010, in the Egyptian town of Nagaa Hammadi. The other two are to be sentenced next month.

This is so sad...I've been following news stories about the Copts lately, it just seems to get worse and worse!
:-(
Anyone know how the recently developed unrest in Egypt is affecting our Coptic brothers and sisters?

Anyone know how the recently developed unrest in Egypt is affecting our Coptic brothers and sisters? Thomas, Although there does not appear to be any sectarian considerations in the present situation, I have read comment from Copts suggesting that the risk to them from Islamic extremists will increase significantly if Mubarek does not manage to effect a peaceful transition of power to a new government. The risk to all Egyptians from Islamic extremists will increase if Mubarak does not effect a peaceful transition of power. It is not clear, though, just how much support the Muslim Brotherhood actually has. When they were the sole voice of opposition, it was one thing, but with a broad-based popular uprising, the majority of Egyptians may look askance at exchanging one set of authoritarian thugs for another.

The Coptic Church has asked its faithfuls not to demonstrate against Mubarak. It is a sign that, nevertheless what Obama and Clinton say, the revolution in Egypt will not upheld democracy but the sharia

I don't believe for a moment that Christ would have done the same.

Sort of hedging one's bets in secular terms.

If they take sides, they are going to get it no matter who wins: if the revolution fails, Mubarak will have no reason to even pretend to offer them protection; he'll come down on them like a ton of bricks. And if the revolution succeeds, then extremists among both the winners and losers will dump on the Copts as convenient scapegoats for everything that goes wrong.

It would be well for all of us to look seriously at which of our countries will receive Coptic refugees.

I happened upon this article [ reuters.com] and thought of this thread, as it ties in to the original post and what is happening today. "Copts say Egypt regime change trumps Islamist fears" "For Rafik, a member of Egypt's Coptic Christian minority, the myth that President Hosni Mubarak is the community's best defense against Islamist militants was shattered by an Alexandria church bombing on New Year's Day. He and other Copts continued to demonstrate alongside at least 1 million Egyptians on Tuesday, saying their desire to end Mubarak's three-decade rule was for now more pressing than any fears that a change of power might empower Islamist groups." ...
