Hello everyone! I am so happy to have the Forum back again!!! I've missed everyone a lot. I spent a week in Mexico the early part of September visiting a friend who is a Roman Catholic priest. We spent a lot of time discussing the Eastern Churches and the Byzantine Divine Liturgy. I gave him a copy of the Liturgy book used by the Ukrainian Catholic Church here in the USA, but was wanting to see if I could find something in Spanish for him and another friend in Mexico who is a seminarian. Anyone got any ideas where I could find one? Also, would like to find any literature in Spanish about the Eastern Catholic Churches to share with them. Thanks and welcome back again!!!

Bless, Reverend Father Don!

Good to see you back here!

There is an excellent "Orthodox Liturgical Resources" website with all kinds of liturgical translations run by Fr. John Whiteford at:

God bless!

Thanks for the information Alex, I'll check them out this afternoon. Good to see you again too my friend! I hope all is well with you. I am no longer "Father Don", my resignation was effective October 1st. We are in the process of setting up my reception into the Ukrainian Catholic Church, it will probably be the first weekend of December or thereabouts. Wish me luck and continue to keep me in your prayers!

When I was in Mexico I had a lot of interest shown in Eastern Catholicism by my priest and seminarian friends. There aren't too many Eastern Catholics in Mexico, although Monterrey (where I was) does have a Maronite parish and you see statues and pictures of St. Sharbel everywhere! Do you know of any Ukrainian parishes in Mexico? I was teasing my priest friend that he should switch over and open a Spanish speaking Ukrainian Catholic mission there!

Thanks again for the info Alex and it is good to have the forum back in operation so I have access once again to your vast knowledge of Eastern Catholicism and your wise words about many things. God bless!

Dear Father Don,

Once a priest . . .

You are too kind, my Father in Christ, as I am a silly fellow deep down who should probably be beaten about the calves and ankles on a regular basis, perhaps with the change of the Celtic seasons!

There are most definitely Spanish and Portuguese speaking Ukrainian Catholic parishes in Latin America, the Ukrainian Basilian and Redemptorist Fathers could tell you more about these. (With all the new saints of their respective Orders they are getting, they should be very happy!).

My wife's late grandfather, a married Ukrainian Catholic priest with a large family (I say this for effect for those not yet used to the idea of married Catholic priests!) wrote a book on liturgical rites where he also described the Spanish Mozarabic Rite.

It is amazing how much other Western Rites have in common with the Byzantine tradition, including the Milanese Rite to which Pope Paul VI belonged!

I am keeping well, am going to return to the teaching of religion and am involved in a number of projects that help expend my pent-up energies in the spiritual direction.

Too many pent-up energies can be bad for you . . .

(I am trying to make you smile - am I succeeding?).

Dear (Fr) Don,

You might try and contact the Eparchy of Van Nuys. They have parishes where the Liturgy is in Spanish and may have literature also.

Hey Don,

I'm a Kansan too! We have our Byzantine Catholic mission here in Wichita.

Uhh, but I wanted to ask you about the Orthodox Museum in Topeka. It just opened last September. Have you gone to it yet? I would LOVE to go there soon!!! Is it good?

Don,

You can find the Divine Liturgy (Ruthenian Recension) in Spanish at the following link:

http://www.byzantines.net/liturgy/index.htm

Spdundas,

Who is pastor of the Byzantine mission in Wichita?
I think that I may have encountered him once.

God Bless,
Anthony

If you want texts in Spanish I can help you. I'm from Mexico but I studied some months in England, where I had my first direct contact with eastern christians, including a Belarussian greek catholic priest.
There are six eastern chrsitian dioceses in Mexico:
1. The Mexican Orthodox Church - Exarchate of Mexico (OCA) with 9 missions, Cathedral of the Ascension of the Lord in Mexico City. Byzantine-Slavic rite. Most of them ethnic mexicans.

2. Antiochian Orthodox Church - Metropolia of Mexico and Latin America, Metropolitan Antonio, arab byzantine rite. Syrian and palestinian inmigrants. Cathedral of the Great Martyr Saint George, DF Mex.

3. Greek Orthodox Church. Cathedral of Saint Sofiya, DF. Ethnic greeks and turkish people.

4. Melkite Greek Catholic Church: Eparchy, Bishop Antonio Mouhana, arab byzantine rite. Syrian Inmigrants. Church Porta Caeli, DF Mex

5. Maronite Christian Eparchy: Bishop Boutros Al-Tayah, lebanese inmigrants. Church of Our Lady of Lebanon, Syriac antiochian rite.

6. Patriarchate of Moscow. One Church in Nepantla, State of Mexico. Father Carlos Chacon, a few inmigrants from Russia and a lot of Mexicans.

There are no Ukrainian parishes in Mexico but a lot of them in Argentina and Brazil. In 1970 the RoCOR tried to build a parish for soviet workers in Tabasco (the south) but the Mexican government and the Soviet embassy said "it was not convenient".

Some people are interested in the East here in my country but it's difficult to get information. I know a Mexican-American who was a teacher in the UNAM and participated in this forum but I don't know what happenned to him. I think he's in L.A.

Hola:

My name is Memo Rodriguez and I am also from Mexico. I currently live in California.

You will have some trouble finding Catholic translations for Eastern Liturgies in Spanish.

As you'd probably notice, I am the author of that translation on the byzantines.net site. I am currently preparing translations for Vespers and for the Akathistos to Our Lady.

I'll keep you guys posted on our progress there.

It seems that there is a surge of interest in Byzantine Christianty among Spanish spoken people lately, time to increase priority on those translations, I think.

Just a clarification: I think that the Greek Melkite Church in Mexico doesn't have an Eparchy yet. I think Porta Coeli is a Patriarchal Mission, I don't know if it's been elevated to Exarchate, but I'm pretty sure not to Eparchy just yet. But then again, I haven't visited for over two years, so...

Many blessings.

Shalom,
Memo.

Memo,

I don't see how it is hard to find "Catholic" liturgical texts in Spanish; www.fatheralexander.org [fatheralexander.org] has almost all our texts in Spanish. All one has to do is subsitute the commemorations for Catholic hierarchs and there you have it.

Memo:

In 1988 the Eparchy of Nuestra Senora del Paradiso en Mexico was erected for Melkite Catholics.

In 1995 the Eparchy of Nuestra Senora de los Martires del Libano en Mexico was erected for Maronite Catholics.

Hello Dragani!

How are you? The pastor of Eastern Catholic Fellowship of Wichita is Reverend Father Peter Leigh. He's a former Orthodox archpriest. He's still an archpriest. Very nice man.

Also Wichita has another Byzantine priest..(he just recently moved to Wichita)...he's Melkite..but is bi-ritual. So he serves at the McConnell Airforce base (he's a chaplain there). I haven't met him yet. I hope he would concelebrate with Fr. Leigh soon.

God bless.

The PIO (pontifical oriental institute)published a Spanish translation of the Divine Liturgy. The copy I have has the date of 1964. I believe this is the official Catholic translation. The translation states that it was promulgated in 1963 by the Sacred Congregation for the Eastern Church(es).

No offense to Memo, but unless he knows the orginal languages, his was a translation from English to Spanish (I apologize to Memo, if this was not the case).

I believe the PIO still offers the Spanish translation.
